Refugio Wins Hoop Title
Downing Sinton, Woodsboro
Sinton—The Refugio Bobcats
downed the Woodsboro Eagles,
56-44, to win the Sinton basket-
ball tournament Saturday night.
The Bobcats had defeated the
Gregory-Portland Wildcats on
Thursday night 60 to 24, then
upset the host Sinton Pirates
53- 48 on Friday night to advance
into the finals. One week earl-
ier, Sinton had captured first
place in the Rotary Tournament
held at Refugio and was the fa-
vorite to win their own tourna-
ment.
Saturday night, the Bobcats
and Eagles engaged in an all-
Refugio county finals. The
Eagles, without the services of
several of the team’s last year
regulars, took a lead over Re-
fugio in the first quarter, but
the Bobcats came back to hold
a lead at the half, then moved
further in front as the game
progressed.
George Lewis was the leader
for the champions with 25
points. Robert Goynes had 21
for Woodsboro.
Sinton beat Ingleside, 69-46,
for third place. Pat McCoy was
high for the winners with 15
while Mike Johnson had 17 for
the losers.
In the consolation finals, West
Oso, led by Riley Odom with 22
points, blasted Aransas Pass,
54- 33. John Goode was the lead-
er for the losers with 11.
Bishop beat Gregory-Portland,
42-34, in another game.
Named to the all tournament
team were Odom, Lewis, John-
son, William Tolliver of Woods-
boro, George Ruiz of Sinton and
Harold Gibson of Refugio.
The Sportsmanship trophy
went to Woodsboro.
THURSDAY’S GAMES
Sinton.—Riley Odom turned in
the outstanding individual per-
formance of the night by pour-
ing in 37 points for West Oso
but the Bears bowed to Woods-
boro, 52-50, in the feature at-
traction of the Sinton Invitation-
al basketball tournament here
Thursday night.
Refugio trounced Gregory-
Portland, 60-24, and Sinton
smothered Aransas Pass, 57-19,
in the other two first - round
games played Thursday.
Odom single - handedly out-
scored Woodsboro’s two high-
point men, William Toliver, with
18 and Philip Lewis with 17,
but the Bears were unable to
contain the rest of the always-
potent Eagles.
Refugio had three players in
double figures, led by Butch
Slaughter with 12 points.
George Lewis followed with 11
and Gene Lewis had 10 while
Johnny Garza was hitting 11 for
Gregory-Portland.
FRIDAY’S GAMES
Refugio advanced to the fin-
als of the Sinton basketball
tournament by defeating Sinton,
53-48, Friday night.
Ronnie Segonovia was high
point man for Sinton with 12
points while George Lewis had
20 for Refugio.
Ingleside bested Bishop, 71-
53, as Ike Johnson had 25 points
for the winners while Ronnie
Higginbothom had 14 for the
losers.
Aransas Pass used the 17-
point play of Floyd Spears to
defeat Gregory - Portland, 49-46,
in the consolation semifinals.
FEED EFFICIENCY OF
BEEF CATTLE
Research done at Texas A&M
University’s Coastal Bend Ex-
periment Station indicates the
cost of cattle feeding goes up
considerally after the cattle
have been on feed for 112 days.
Ed Neal and Bill Conrad say
their tests show a sharp de-
crease in the conversion of feed
to grain the cattle after 112
days. Because of this factor,
they say feeders should study
marketing possibilities before
extending feeding periods past
the 112-day period. Might be bet-
ter to sell than to continue feed-
ing.

Tivoli. — The Austwell-Tivoh
Redfish and the Industrial Co-
bras won championships in
their divisions here Saturday
night in the fourth annual Red-
fish Basketball Tournament, be-
fore a packed house.
The Redfish, coming from be-
hind in the second half after
trailing in the first half, de-
feated the Aransas County Pi-
rates 59-40 for the second
straight year to win the top
trophy. Aransas County reached
the finals by defeating Indus-
trial 52-40.
The Industrial girls took an
early lead, fought off a last
period attack to down the Aust-
well-Tivoli girls 48-4 ’ Lowana
Baker, shooting from outside
the circle, popped in 31 points
to spark the Cobra attack. It
’"as the first time the Indus-
trial girls have won the Red-
fish tournament. They finished
in third place in 1964.
Two new records were set in
the three-day tourney. Bloom-
ington’s Flora Coleman had a
three game total of 120 points
to break the old mark of 110
points set by Linda Linville of
Bloomington in 1964. The old
mark of team points for a game
of 67 set by the Redfish girls
in 1964 fell twice in this year’s
tournament. The Redfish did it
first on Thursday when they
beat Devereux 82-19 and then
it occurred again Saturday
when Bloomington beat Pala-
cios for third place 72-38.
An all tournament team in
each division was announced
after the game. The six girls
are Betty Karl, Lowana Baker
and Linda Stuart from Indus-
trial, Elise Levien of Woods-
boro, Christine Muniz of Tivoli
and Coleman from Blooming-
ton.
There were six boys on the
all tournament team, when a
tie developed in the voting.
They are Thomas Lewis of
Aransas County, Edward Har-
vey and James Summers from
Austwell-Tivoli, Bob Thorsen
from Devereux, and the Craig
twins, Ronald and Donald from
Industrial.
