THE LIGHT STILL SHINES i We cannot deny the reality of
A revealing insight into the | darkness in the world. It was true
meaning of Christmas is given in in Jesus’ time. Mary and Joseph
the New Testament translation (by were in Bethlehemi because of the
Dr. Edgar Johnson Goodspeed: demands of the Roman Empire,
‘The light is still shining in the which was founded on force and
darkness, for the darkness has the extraction of heavy taxes. Hie-
never put it out.” (St. John 1:5) rod, who ruled over Palestine, was

Christ Child. Such darkness sur-
rounded Jesus throughout His life
and finally closed in on Him! at
the cross of Calvary.
There is still much darkness in
the world. We still face the dark
facts of sin, illness, tragedy, and
death. Good men suffer, and evil
men seem to prosper. Violence
breaks out even in the midst of
what we call our Christian
civilization, and there are those
Who scoff at lawi and or(der. Fear
and hatred still raise their ugly
heads, and the world trembles at
intervals in fear of nuclear wiar
and universal (destruction.
What does it mean, then, when
we say that the light is still shin-
ing in the darkness? It means
that all the forces of evil have not
been able to put out the light of
God which came into the world in
Jesus the Christ. It means that
God is more powerful than the
Devil, and that Hell cannot over-
come Heaven. It means that God
is present even in the darkness,
to give men the light they need
to live by and to give them hope.
It m)eans that in Christ God camie
into His world holding out a hand
to His children that they might
walk through the darkness with a
prayer on their lips and a song
in their hearts.

Christmas Rush
Poses Dangers
Austin—The Texas Safety Asso-
ciation today warned that Christ-
mas shopping and heavy holiday
traffic are a dangerous combina-
tion.
‘‘Rushing and distracted shop-
pers in busy downtown areas and
in shopping centers, create a spe-
cial traffic safety hazard during
the month of December,” J. O.
Musick, General Manager of TSA
said
The safety director has these
tips for holiday shoppers:
Avoid window shopping when be-
hind-the-wheel of your car.
Don’t pile Christmas packages
so high in the back seat of your
car that the rear view window
is blocked.
Stay alert for traffice lights. In
gaily decorated shopping area, it
is easy to mistake an ornamental
light for a traffice light.
Watch out for bundle-loaded pe-
destrains. Many shoppers are so
loaded down with packages That
their vision is obscured when they
cross the street.
Plan your shopping trips to a-
void last-minute rushing.
Leave the holiday “spirits” at
home. You need all your wits for
driving and walking.
Go to church Sunday.
Doctoral Degrees
Austin—In the five years from
1957 to 1962,- The University of
Texas awarded about seven out of
every 10 doctoral degrees granted
in Texas’ 19 fully State-supported
instructions. That estimate comes
from figures compiled by the Tex-
as Commission on Higher Educa-
tion. During the five-year period,
state institutions granted a total of
1,174 doctoral degrees. Of that
number, 836 Doctor of Philosophy
or Doctor of Education degrees ( re
presenting slightly more than 71
per cent of the total) came from
The University of Texas. A 1960
report from the U. S. Office of Ed-
ucation shows that the University
leads the South in the number of
doctoral degrees granted.
