A bike should be bought to fit—not to grow into. But back
in the 1880’s there wasn’t much choice. Most bicycles weighed
about 100 pounds and cost about a dollar a pound. Today,
there are two-wheelers of all o-
sizes, made to fit every purse.
More than a million bikes
will be given as Christmas pres-
ents this year. If you’ll be one
of the buyers, check this simple
bike buying guide from the
Bicycle Institute of America:
♦ 4-5 years old—16-inch wheel
* 6-7 years old—20-inch wheel
• 7-10 years old—24-inch wheel
• 11-75 years old—26-inch wheel
_ The B.I.A. points out that
sized-to-fit bikes are important
for safety as well as comfort.
The shorty on an over-sized
bike . . . the teen on his little
brother’s two-wheeler—are both
sure to have control problems.
How do you judge the correct
bike size? If the rider’s heel is
on the pedal when his leg is
straight, and the pedal is at its
lowest point, you’ve got the
right fit. If the seat can’t be
adjusted to meet this require-
ment, try another size.
There’s another big plus to
the B.I.A. guide: you won’t
have to take Junior along to
pick out the right size bike . . .
you can keep the surprise for
Christmas morning!
