Burglary Suspect
Arrested In The Act
SEAGOVILLE, TX - On the afternoon of
October 12, 2012, Seagoville patrol officers re-
sponded to a call of suspicious circumstances at
a residence in the 200 block of Creek Stone. An
alert neighbor called the Police Department after
witnessing a male loitering around a home.
Responding officers discovered that Jason
Alan Ortega, 22, of Seagoville, was inside of this
home committing a burglary upon their arrival.
Ortega fled from the home and officers were able
to apprehend him after a foot pursuit.
Ortega was charged with the offense of
Burglary of a Habitation and is currently being
held in the Dallas County Jail. His bond is set at
$50,000.
This ia a great example of the community
and police working together. Last week during
an unrelated incident a resident called and re-
ported suspicious activity at a car wash, which re-
sulted in another burglar being caught in the act.

School.
The Little Pirates of Wilson showed
their support for Breast Cancer Aware-
ness by dressing in pink, and donating
$2.00 dollars. All proceeds supported The
Hamilton Family. October is Breast Can-

families.
Who is the Hamilton Family? Amelia
Hamilton is the High School Spanish teach-

Maddie who attends Wilson. Amelia was
recently diagnosed this year, and the stu-

AUSTIN, TX - More than
a dozen attorneys representing
about 600 Texas school districts
laid out their case on Monday
that the state education funding
system is inefficient, outmoded
and favors wealthy districts over
poor ones. They contend that over
time, the system has eroded many
students' chances of getting a
good education. Five other cases
have alleged as much since the
1980s.
Marisa Bono is a staff attor-
ney with the Mexican American
Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF),
which represents some of the
state's poorest districts. This time,
she says, tougher achievement
tests and graduation requirements
are shedding new light on long-
time problems.
"The difference with this
case is that we're really at an un-
high-stakes testing that's going to
be very expensive for school dis-
tricts."
One school superintendent
in the courtroom was Dr. Nabor
Cortez, of the small La Feria
School District near Harlingen. In
response to budget cuts, he says,
they've laid off teachers and aides
although their student population
continues to grow. The state allo-
cates some dollars based on num-
bers of lower-income, special-
education and English-language
learners. Cortez says those for-
mulas are outdated.
"The Weighted Average Dai-
ly Attendance, which is based on
formulas, they have not been up-
dated in ages - for 20 to 30 years.
We know that there's something
called 'inflation,' and it doesn't
forgive anybody."

“Alan King has served the
district ably and with integrity
in every capacity and I wish him
well,” said Miles. “During our
discussion today, Alan told me
that when he accepted the posi-
tion of Chief of Staff, he felt it
would be temporary until our new
administrative team was in place.
Now that the first 100 days has
been completed and a new admin-
istrative team is solidly in place,
he felt as if he had accomplished
his goal of shepherding the transi-
tion.”
“It has been an honor for me
to serve this school district and I
wish all of the best to the elected
trustees, Superintendent Miles,
the new administration as well as
the staff of the Dallas Independent
School District,” said King. “I am
proud of the continued progress
made by the nearly 20,000 dedi-
cated employees in the district.”
Miles noted that King leaves
the district in a stronger financial
position than when he started. The
district’s fund balance is projected
to be approximately $189 million
at the end of the 2011-12 school
year. Miles said that a strong team
remains in place that will be able
to keep the district’s financial op-
erations on solid footing.
“Please join me in thanking
Mr. King for his service to the
students, parents, staff and tax-
payers of the Dallas Independent
School District,” said Miles.
