rbs Flamingo.
A writer on flamingoes, which ha
has studied in their haunts in the
Bahamas, says of them: They are
probably as near to the geese as to
any othor order of birds, baring a
similar structure of hill sad feet and
somewhat similar feather character.
They are unique, however, in their
curiosly heat bill, which, though goose-
like in general economy, is con-
structed ta every detail upalde down,
as ths bird in feeding reaches down
to the bottom and places toe top of
the bill down. The tongue Is also
constructed In the earns inverted way.
The webbed feet are for sustaining the
birds la the soft oose they lovo to feed
in, Acting like snowshoea.'*

Why Amsrioana Were Superior.
One of the determining elements la
the war of ISIS was the superiority
of American naval guns and gunnery.
Cept. Mahan points out that while
the British were twice as strong as
the American In earronsdss or short
runs, which gave them a marked ad-
ant age la Agbting at close quarters,
ne Americans were four times as
strong as the British In long guns,
vblch gsvo them a corresponding ad-
vantage la lighting at long range,
rheee factors virtually enabled the
American* to dictate the conditions
>f battle and contributed largely to
‘heir success.
World’s Champion Weight Carrier.
The Armenian porters of Constan-
tinople are bei'eved to be the cham-
pion weight carriers of the world.
They have been known for centuries
as "hamals"—L e.. camels. But while
a camel Is heavily burdened at 300
pounds for a day's inarch, theae men.
according to genersf belief, quoted In
?prson's "Armenia.” will carry for a
short distance, probably from ship to
shore, as much aa 600 pounds. There
Is a well-attested story of a “bamal”
having been seen In the streets of
Constantinople with a grand piano on
bis back.
Making Sweet Scents.
The oils of rosea, lavender, orange
blossoms and many others are ob-
tained by dies, .lug the flowers In
water. The oils rise with the steam
and float on the top of the water,
which presently condenses In the re-
ceiver. Thus the pure oil Is extract-
ed. but the water remaining, impreg-
nated with minute particles of the
oil, retains a delightful fragrance, and.
under such names as rose water and
lavender water, is placed upon the
market as perfumes for the toilet.
Women Not All Alike.
"Women are all alike,” Is a favorite
syllogism on the lips of youthful mas-
culinity. The chief troubles of the
unquiet sex, on the contrary, have
arisen from the fact that they are not
all alike, and that men are determined
they shall he. If they could all have
good cooks, for Instance, their path-
way through this world of woe would
have been much smoothed. Uafortun
ately, they have been unable to en-
tirely eupprees individuality, much as
"woman’s sphere" has contributed to
that end.

Hunting In India.
Aa Englishman who recently went
hunting in Irdta with the maharajah
of Rewah writes: ’The various passes
up which game is expected to go are
each commanded by a comfortable
■tone built stand. The beaters on foot
were over 1,000, and besides these
there were a troop of Rewah cavalry
and about thirty elepusnU. Much was
expected and soy hope* rose as I beard
heavy firing on my riahi, out nothing
came my way except some ‘lady* sam
bur, accompanied by one stag too
■mall to shoot. I used my camera in-
stead at my rifle. The total bag only
consisted of two sam bur stags. One
bear was missed and two. leopards
were said to have broken back, be-
sides many sambur.”

The Needlessly Tired.
There are many tired people In the
world who ere needlessly so. That
Is, they possess false notions about
the necessity of constant work. They
are unwilling to learn the lesson that
rest la one at the Imperative lews of
Nature’s code, and that ta that lew
there ia an eapreee stipulation that
proper observation will be rewarded

Japanese Medicines.
According to the Chemist and Drug-
gist. ths native drug stores in Japan
are still largely stocked with dried
snakes, toads, lisards, crabs, etc., in-
fusions of whlcb are the popular
household remedies throughout the
country. Various “secret remedies”
which ere supposed to be as universal
sad potent In their curative effects as
many of our Western patent medi-
cines. also abound. Magic plasters are
much in vogue, and massage ta large-
ly practiced, the operators being
chiefly blind people. Face pain** aad
powders may also be seen oa the
shelves.
