their operations are damaging to the
city and becoming even more danger-
ous, because the railroads are making
discriminations In favor of other lo-
calities, all of which Is detrimental to
our Interests here."
K Blakely Is only one of several
business men who take this view of
the situation, and it is probable that
the Merchants and Manufacturers’ as
soclatlon will take the matter up tor
consideration at Its next meeting. The
question has become an Important one
to the commercial Interest! of the city
and, as the railroads are co-operating
with the merchants in other matters,
it is but naural to suppose that the
association will aid bhe railroads in
legislating the scalpers out of the city.

FAVOR ANTI SCALPING LAWS.
New Orleans Deprived of 8top-Over
World's Fair Travel.
The Merchants and Manufacturers’
association of New Orleans U deter-
mined to seek the passage of an dnti-
scalping ordinance through the city
council of New Orleans.
At a recent meeting of the associa-
tion nearly fifty letters were nad
from merchant buyers residing In Tex-
as points, regretting their inability to
visit this city to buy, on account of
the railroads refusing cheaper fare
and the requisite stop-over privilege.
St. Louis and other places protecting
the roads were given the preference.
The association, in the face of this
positive evidence of Injury to the city
by the existence of the scalpers, or-
dered active measures taken to canal-
ize matters.
The business men of New Orleans
want an anti-scalping ordinance
passed by the city council, as they
have come to realize that these people
are hurting the commerce of the city.
Something must be done to curtail
their operations,
When the World’s Flair travel first
opened up passengers were given the
privilege of a stop-over to New Or-
leans. but because of trafficking to
these and other tickets this privilege
was refused, and now cheap rates are
give%g|tfr all the roads to this section
SaMpit* around this city, but not to
New Orleans, because of the scalp-
ers. The bulk of Texas travel comes
through NSw Orleans, or would come
rather, if the passengers could stop
over here for a few days, and the
merchants and business men are suf
faring as a result.
“I believe the scalpers are hurting
eveiy line of business to the city,”
ssld A. R. Blakely, “and there Is no
question but that they hate hurt the
hotel business. When a man Is al-
