Bellaire Update
By Bellaire City Council
More money for Metro?
In response to the article, ‘‘Metro bucks
guarded,” in The T«m on May i3, i9o7: How
much money does MTA now have in its coffers?
The U.S. government will soon add many dollars
to the above, so what will that make the total?
To date how many dollars have been spent on
“studies" that they know the voters will veto?
"If sales tax revenues are drastically cut, a good
service will be impossible.” Would a one cent cut
make good service impossible? Has it ever been
considered how this one cent could help out the
State budget?
Has it ever been considered that the salaries
paid to MTA directors could be cut to save money?
Why shouldn’t the budget be reviewed yearly?
Shouldn’t inflation and other factors make their
proposals more realistic?
What has been the objection to having some
directors voted in rather than appointed? Is it good
planning (here in Bellaire) when they tear up a
street then leave it to work on the transfer station?
Bellaire needs the business of residents and
others passing through the city. Can't their
method be improved?

Editor's Note—MTA board members receive $50
per meeting, up to $250 per month and an MTA
spokesman said some board members choose not
to accept payment.
Ticket turns him sour
Yesterday morning I was taking care of some
business in Bellaire. Upon leaving that place of
business I was pulled over by a police officer and
given a citation for not wearing a seat belt.
In five years of living in Houston. I have never
gotten a traffic ticket of any kind. I have a good job.
I consider myself a good citizen. I don’t drive a fast
car. 1 just happened to forget to fasten my seat
belt.
Whatever hapened to warnings or consideration
for someone who is obviously not a lawbreaker?
Their small town tactics in which the police prey
on unsuspecting citizens, looking for any excuse to
add to the city’s coffers, really have me soured on
the city of Bellaire.

Wright is wrong
Representative Brad Wright is wrong! Wrong to
support the "Harris County Road Assessment
Law” which allows a Commissioner to take away a
person’s property without “just” compensation.
Wright is wrong by not attending this very
important committee hearing, when he is a
r«
l

member of that very committee. He is wrong,
especially since he is a Harris County Represen-
tative. He knew that a (50 to 100 member)
delegation of Harris bounty citizens was going to
be at that hearing, to testify (on behalf of House
Bill H 1767) to repeal the “Harris County Road
Assessment Law.”
Wright is wrong to believe the people of Harris
County are going to sit back and let a few
Representatives take away the right to peaceably
own real estate in Harris County! Wright is right if
he believes thousands of property owners will
REMEMBER his decision to support this type of
Law!
Brad Wright needs to remember the “American
Dream” is possible only through freedom. A "free
man” is someone not under the control or power of
another. Without property rights, no other rights
are possible. A man’s property is an extension of
his very life!

At a workshop
meeting on May 11, City
Council reviewed infor-
mation on a proposed
computer for the Police
Department.
The city's main com-
puter is currently at full
capacity and cannot
accommodate any ad-
ditional workload. With
the removal of the Police
Department’s require-
ments, other city depart-
ments will have an
opportunity to utilize the
computer. The new com-
puter will allow out-
standing warrants to be
collected by the city
which should generate
approximately $45,000
in revenue annually.
Staff was instructed to
proceed with the
bidding process.
Council also received
and reviewed a number
of policies related to the
city's utility operation.
In addition, Council
instructed staff to rebid
the proposed parking lot
at Mulberry Park. This
project will provide for a
larger and improved
parking area. Park
drainage improvements
are also included in this
project.
The Tax Increment
financing Board at their
meeting on May 12,
discussed the sidewalks
being installed as paH of
the South Rice/Bellaire
Boulevard project. A
recommendation will be
made to council in the
near future.
