Ms. Chisholm earned respect
as a “maverick” for her efforts on
behalf of Blacks, Hispanics and
Native Americans. In 1968, Ms.
Chisholm became the first Black
woman to be elected to the United
States Congress. In 1972, she
made history again by campaign-
ing for the Democratic Party
nomination for President of the
United States; becoming the first
Black worn an to seek the nation ’ s
second highest office.
In February 1982, Representa-
tive Chisholm announced that she
would not seek re-election to Con-
gress. Throughout her career in
public service, she has champi-
oned the causes of Black col-
leges, compensatory education,
minimum wage for domestics,
Haitian refugees, migrant farm
workers, and the poor.
You are invited to come hear
this dynamic, fighting woman
who continues to struggle for
peace, prosperity and equality for
all Americans.
