Valdez leaving for Rockport
BY TERRY HAGERTY
thagerty@acnmwspapers.com.
After 14 years as Bas-
trop City Secretary, Tere-
sa Valdez is headed to the
beach.
During the regular
city council meeting last
week, it was announced
by city manager Mike
Talbot that Valdez will be
city secretary for the Gulf
Coast city of Rockport.
Valdez said although
she was looking to retire,
she and her husband Joel
had kept her options open
about possible future em-
ployment.
“We bought lots (in
Rockport) as part of our
retirement plan, but said
if I landed a good job we
would move sooner - and I
landed a good job,” Valdez
said.
Fishing will be near
the top of the next phase
of her life, along with her
daily job.
“We fish and have a
boat,” Valdez said. “I fish
in the women’s tourna-
ment, ‘Babes on the Bay,’
which is the largest sanc-
tioned women’s fishing
tournament in the U.S.”
Will miss co-workers
Valdez said she will
miss a lot about Bastrop
- both the people and the
locale.
“They are all great
people to work with,”
Valdez said of her fellow
workers. “I appreciate all
the city employees whom I
have had the opportunity
to work - and play with. It
is a known fact that most
of us spend more time
with our co-workers then
we do our own families.”
Valdez spoke to the
expertise of the people
she worked with, but also
wrapped the praise in a
little humor.
“Every department
head I have ever worked
with here in Bastrop was

knowledgeable of their
respective departments,”
Valdez said. “I found them
to be very cooperative
in meeting deadlines for
(getting in) agendas. But,
there were times when I
threatened to ‘beat them
with a wet noodle’ if they
did not get their agenda
items to me by deadline!”
Valdez said working at
Bastrop City Hall seemed
to draw people closer to-
gether.
“In my case, I can say
that I have been truly
blessed because my co-
workers became part of
my family,” Valdez said.
“They shared my mo-
ments of happiness, they
comforted me in my times
of sorrow and I will miss
them all.”
Valdez pointed out
several workers whom she
particularly appreciated,
including former adminis-
trative assistant Deanna
Call.
“Deanna and I became
a very close while she was
employed here,” Valdez
said. “She and I imme-
diately bonded, became
friends and confidants.
When Deanna retired
from the city we lost a
hard-working, ethical,
honest and dependable
employee - but I didn’t
lose a friend.”
Valdez also had much
praise for Talbot.
“Mike is the best boss
I have ever had,” Valdez
said. “Mike and I are both
very hyper people. Most of
the time, communication
between the two of us was
very minimal because we
both knew what the other
