Elks Take Down Panthers
By Margaret Barnett
Last Friday night the
Panhandle Panthers host-
ed the Stratford Elks who
were ranked the number
one team in the State of
Texas in Division I. The
Panthers stayed with the
Elks for the first 24 min-
utes of the game but in
the second half the Pan-
thers fell behind and the
defense could not stop
the Elks as they scored on
seven of their eight pos-
sessions. The final score
of the game was the Strat-
ford Elks 73 and the Pan-
handle Panthers 46.
The Panthers received
the Elks’ kickoff to be-
gin the game and after
three plays were forced to
punt. The Elks took over
on their own 34 yard line
and advanced to the Pan-
thers’ 20 yard line where
they attempted to kick
a field goal with 7:47 on
the clock in the first quar-
ter. The field goal was
no good and the Panthers
took over. With 5:45 on
the clock, the Panthers
put the first points on the
score board with a 37-yard
touchdown strike from
Tyler Hall to Travis Jew-
ett. Tucker Wise tacked
on the extra point and the
Panthers had the lead 7-0.
The Elks added a score of
their own with 2:29 left
in the quarter to knot the
score 7-7. The home team
took the ball in for a score
with 11:12 in the second
quarter on a 19-yard run
by Hall and with the Wise
kick the Panthers took the
lead back 14-7. The Elks
answered again to tie the
score 14-14 with 6:35 re-
maining in the first half.
The Panthers began their
next possession on their
own 17 yard line. It took
only four plays to find the
end zone, this time on a
72-yard run up the middle
by Patrick Shadid. So
with 5:47 left in the half,
the Panthers again take
the lead 21-14. The next
possession by the Elks
ended with a fumble on
the first play recovered
by Dalton Luman. The
Panthers took five plays
to score on a Hall to Aus-
tin Terrell 21-yard pass in
the end zone followed by
another successful Wise
kick to put the Panthers
up 28-14 with 4:02 left in
the half. The Elks scored
on their next two posses-
sions to end the first half
in a tie, 28-28.
The second half was
all Elks. They scored on
seven of their eight pos-
sessions while the Pan-
thers crossed the goal line
three times in the sec-
ond half. The Panthers
scored on a three-yard
run by Hall in the third
quarter and then twice in
the fourth quarter with a
five-yard pass from Hall
to Terrell and a 25-yard
pass from Hall to Cory
Free to end their scoring
total at 46 points. The
Elks had great field posi-
tion to begin four of their
drives. With less than two
minutes remaining in the
game and leading by 19
points, the Elks go with
no huddle and score with
1:13 on the clock to go
ahead 73-46.
Shadid was the lead-
ing ground gainer with
10 carries for 102 yards.
Shadid scored on a 72-
yard run in the second
quarter of play. Hall had

Many folks don't re-
alize the services that
Panhandle ISD offers its
students. One of these
services is speech and
language training for its
students who struggle
with speech and lan-
guage. Panhandle ISD is
fortunate to have one of
its former students Amber
Brinkley working with its
students. Mrs. Brinkley
is a licensed Speech and
Language therapist.
