Lubbock Cagers Close Campaign As Co-Champions
The 1963-64 District 3-4A bas-
ketball race came to an abrupt
end last Friday night for the Lub-
bock Westerners when Plainview’s
Bulldogs closed the door on Lub-
bock’s state title hopes with a nar-
row 72-71 overtime win. In fact,
the Bulldog feat was almost un-
believable.
TRAILING MOST of the night,
the Westerners fought back from
a 44-36 halftime deficit to knot
the score at 68-all with 41 seconds
remaining in the game on a three-
point play by Gary Washington.
Neither team scored again and reg-
ulation play ended.
In the overtime stanza Lubbock
jumped to a seemingly safe three-
point lead, 71-68. Plainview’s Paul
Aday popped in two points to nar-
row the count to 71-70 with 48
seconds remaining, but still the
Lubbock lead appeared enough.
But then tragedy struck. With sev-
en seconds showing on the clock,
the Westerners took the ball out
near mid court.
DORIAN CLAWSON threw the
ball in to Larry Doyle, who in
turn tossed to Joe Dobbs. But be-
fore the tall senior could get it,
Phil Stephenson intercepted and
passed the ball to Aday who scor-
ed the decisive points on a lay-up.
No more time remained, and Plain-
view had won the right to advance
to bi-district.
Even though Plainview beat
Lubbock last Friday, in the final
district standings both will enter
the record books as co-champions.
Each finished regular conference
competition with 12-4 records.
Monterey was third with an 11-5
mark, Pampa, Tascosa, Palo Duro
and Borger came next with 8-8
slates. Amarillo High ended next
to last with a 5-11 record, while
winless Caprock held down the
cellar.
BUDDY FULGHAM led Lub-
bock in scoring and placed third
in district with 258 points and a
16.1 average for 16 conference out-
ings. Washington ranked eighth
with 206 points and a 12.9 mean,
while Dobbs tied for tenth with
196 points and a 12.3 average.
In the playoff game, Washing-
ton hit 16 to lead Lubbock, while
Doyle had 15, David Milburn 14
and Fulgham 12.
THE BULLDOGS scored 1,114
points during the campaign to
emerge as the district’s highest
scoring team. Lubbock scored 1,035
points to rank third in that cate-
gory. Leading the defensive de-
partment, Monterey allowed only
779 points to district opponents.
The Westerners were second in
this division, giving up 875 points.
Plainview’s success was a short
one, however, as the Bulldogs
lost to Haltom City in the bi-dis-
trict tilt 88-82 in two overtimes.
The Fort Worth school held Ron-
nie Peret, District 3-4A’s leading
scorer, to a scant 12 points. In dis-
trict play, the Plainview junior
had averaged over 21 points per
game.
DOYLE, WHO was the only oth-
er Westerner averaging in double
figures, hit at a 10.9 clip, and over-
all scored 174 points. As a team,
Lubbock averaged 64.7 points per
game.
