regional qualifier, Sandy Sandus-
ky, Gage and Carroll will be the
broad jumpers. Blake McFadden
will be the only high jumper re-
presenting Lubbock High.
Ted Ratcliff will toss the shot
and he and Nick Jackson will
throw the discus. Sophomore Jim
Holmes will be the only pole
vaulter.
"ALTHOUGH WE lost George
Coon and Sandusky this year,”
states Coach Bob McGuire, “we
have a good team which should
improve greatly.”
Last season, the golfers placed
third in the Sweetwater match and
Coach Jerry Fairley is hoping that
the linksmen will improve over
their finish of last season.
PLAYING IN the A division to-
morrow will be Dayid Cockran,
James Blakey, Carl Pounds and
Carl Kirk or Jerry Bigham. Last
weekend, these boys placed sev-
enth in a field of eight teams at
the Andrews Golf tournament.
Lubbock High’s tennis team
travels to Wichita Falls today and
tomorrow for their first meet of
the season. Thirty schools from
Oklahoma and Texas will attend.
COACH JAMES Burgess will
take six boys and six girls. In
boys’ singles are Joe Malley and
Jerry Mankins. In doubles are
Jimmy Martin and Mike O’Neal
along with John Harding and Paul
Thomas.
In the girls’ singles will be Jody
Wilson and Cindy Hale while in
the doubles are Suzy Crain and
Kay Young, along with Gwynne
Underwood and Sally Brightwell.
LUBBOCK'S Westerners open
their 1964 baseball campaign
against the Snyder Tigers in Low-
rey Field at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Although Coach Earl Parker has
10 lettermen and 7 squadmen back
from last year’s 3-11 district club
he will depend mainly on his
sophomores and juniors. Starting
for Lubbock will be Terry Witt on
the mound with Danny Strawn
catching. The infield will consist
of David Milburn at first, Eddie
Stiles at second, Johnny Barnett at
short, and either Jerry Holt or
Nathan Lindley at third.
In the outfield will be Jim De-
Sherlia in center, Roy Farmer in
right and Joe Mac Tilson in left.
In commenting on the outlook
for this year’s team Coach Parker
said, “We’ll have a good defensive
club with improved pitching. Our
hitting is questionable right now
and we’ll have an inexperienced
outfield, but we’ll do a lot of run-
ning, trying to force the other
teams into mistakes.”
