BILLY SUNDAY THE
BASEBALL PREACHER
Honey Giovc Signal
Some years ago Billy Sunday was
a noted baseball player and a favor
ite with the tans in all the league
cities One night Billy tore away
from his companions and attended a
revival meeting An eloquent sermon
was pieached and Billy was conveit
ed Soon he laid aside the mitt and
bat took up the Bible and deserted
the7diamond for the pulpit Today he
is piobably the most successful evan-
gelist in the United States It has
been said that he is not an educated
man and some make the charge that
his sermons are maiked by rough-
ness bordering upon indecency This
hoveer a Des Moines paper disputes
and publishes an extract from one of
his discourses to piove that as a ser
monizer he excels while in beauty of
expression he has few equals The
extract which we ieproduce below is
indeed a gem
Twentytwo years ago with the
Holy Spiiit as my guide I entered
this wonderful temple called Christi
anity I entered at the poi tico of Gen-
esis walked down through the Old
Testament art galleiy wheie the pic
tures of Noah Abiaham Moses Jo-
seph Isaac Jacob and Daniel hung
on the wall I passed into the music
room of the Psalms wheie the spirit
swept the keyboard of natuie and
brought foith the diigelike wail of
the weeping piophet Jeremiah to the
rand impassioned strain of Isiah un-
til it seemed that every reed and pipe
in Gods great organ of nature re-
sponded to the tuneful harp of David
the sweet singer of Israel I entered
the chapel of Ecclesiastes where the
voice of the preacher was heard and
into the conservatory of Sharon and
the Lily of the Valleys sweet scented
spiies filled and perfumed my life I
enteied the business office of Piov
erbs then into the observatory room
of the prophets where I saw tele-
scopes of various sizes some pointing
to faroff events but all concentrated
upon the bright and morning star
which was to rise above the moonlit
hills of Judea for our salvation I
enteied the audience loom of the
King of Kings and caught a vision of
His glory from the standpoint of
Matthew Mark Luke and John pass
ed into the Acts of the Apostles
where the Holy Spirit was doing his
office work in the foraiai
infant church Then into
pondence room where satMatthew
Mark Luke John Paul Peter James
and Judge pennmg their epistles I
stepped into the throne room of Rev-
elations where all towered into glit-
tering peaks and I got a vision of
the King bitting upon His throne in
all His glory and I cried
All hail the power of Jesus name
Let angels prostrate fall
Bring forth the loyal diadem
And crown Him Lord of all
