Jewish children are growing up with-
out a shred o the culture and ideals
ot their fathers To propagate these
among them should be the real work
of our university men
At no great futuro time I look to
see the Jews in America number 5000
000 The Jew is to have an important
part in the saving of the world and
the unversity man should take the
foremost place in the work
I cannot but deeply regret the spirit
so prevalent in many universities as
well as in societies and clubs com-
posed of university men which differ-
entiate between man and man be-
cause of the race he has sprung from
or the belief to which he holds
In the university the reply to such
narrowness is not to meet excluslve
ness with more exclusiveness with
the establishment of separate Greek
letter or smaller societies for the Jew-
ish student but rather to combat the
existing prejudice with the effort for
which the Jewish Menorah has ever
been the symbol Let there be light
I have accepted your invitation and
have come here tonight to your second
annual banquet not alone to give evi-
dence of my interest in your society
and its efforts but as much to emphasize
with all
size once more my oneness
who make honest and dignified en-
deavor to vouchsafe the position of the
attempt is
Jew more so wherever an
made to ostracize him and relegate him
to second place
ANot thatI have any criticism to
pass continued Mr Schiff upon the
great university itself which is your
honored alma mater or upon the stu-
dent body of whom you form a part
But I cannot but deeply regret the
spirit so prevalent in many univer-
sities as well as in societies and clubs
composed of university men which
differentiates between man and man
because of the race he has sprung
from or the belief which he holds
A gifted and nobleminded Ameri-
can author has recently in describing
in one of his novels an outbreak ot
prejudice against a Jewish university
put into the lattprs mouth these de-
fensive words
They have civilized the world the
Jewish student is made to say of his
race and what have they gotten from
it but brutal barbarism They gave
you your laws and your literature
your morality and your religion oven
your Christ and you have violated
every law human and divine in their
oppression You have perpetuated an
act Qf agelong hypocracy and have in
the nan of the Prince of Peace bru
tallzedovor his people You have cru-
cified a whole people through the
ages the one people who have stood
over for one God who havo stood for
morality and peace A Jew Yes I
am a Jew I thank the God of fBrael
thatvl am for as He saved the world
THE JEWISH HERALD
in tho past so Ho will save it in the
future
We have In these blessed United
States no reason to despair becauso
some of tho advantages which perfect
equality brings are partially denied
the Jew through prejudice which has
its origin mainly in ignorance and nar-
rowness and reflects vastly more upon
those who possess it than upon those
against whom it is prncticed
