HURT BY INJURIES
Oiler Coach Believes
Bigger Squad Needed
HOUSTON UPI - Houston
Oilers Coach Wally Lftmn
thinks pro football squads
should be increased from 40 to
44 men as a buffer against in-
jury. But Lemm doubts the
owners will favor such
change.
Lemm attributed the poor
showings of the Oilers, Loa An-
geles, Cleveland and Dallas to
imurtes, and said a toyman
squad has a difficult time ab-
sorbing a series of injuries.
As an example, Lemm said,
Oilers quarterback Charley
Johnson has a broken collar
bone and reserve quarterback
Jerry Rhome has a bad knee,
so Itmm has to carry a third
quarterback as a safety mea-
sure But the 40-nian squad is
not made for three quarter-
backs, Lemm said.
"It hurts you not only from
playing ability, but also your
morale,'' Lemm said. "Our re-
placements have come through
so injuries hurt us more mo-
rale-wise than anything else —
and on special teams.
"When you move mep, up
from the special teams to start,
you weaken the special teams.
If it wasn’t for carrying a third
quarterback we’d have,, Jeff
Lewis active and Lewis is a
good special teams man."
Lemm said if he had. had
more space on his squad he
would have kept rookie run-
ning back Bill Dusenbery, now
with New Orleans.
"We started the season with
five good running backs, to the
point where we cut a good
promising running back, hop-
ing to keep him on the cab
squad,” Lemm said. “But he
gets picked up and we're hurt-
ing later.”
Cincinnati claimed Dusen-
bery. then cut him and he went
to the Saints.
Umm said he doubts if there
will be any increase In the size
of pro squads soon.
"The move afoot is to cut
down, but after this year I
don’t know how popular this
will be,” Lemm said.
Th* Oilers' injury list, in ad-
dition to the quarterbacks, is
composed of linebacker George
Webster, running backs Hoyle
Granger and Woody Campbell,
guard Tom Regner and comer-
back Bob Atkins. Players who
have been out but are back are
linebackers Garland Boyette
and Loyd Wainscott, fullback
Roy Hopkins and wide receiver
Charley Joiner.
"The teams at the top like
San Francisco, Baltimore and
Minnesota ha\> been relative-
ly free of injury,” Lemm said.
He said the Oilers had no
new injuries in Sunday's 30-20
loss to San Francisco. The Oil-
ers, 2-6-1, go to Cleveland Sun-
day to play the Browns, who
are tied with Pittsburgh for the
division lead with 4-5 records.

Fall of Cowboys Stirring Chatter
By ED FITE
UPI Sports Writer
DALLAS UPI - The Dallas
Cowboy's fall from grace as the
National East’s perennial champ
has left "a lot of people-includ-
ing the coach—on the spot,"
Cowboy Coach Tom Landry ad-
mits.
Landry's observations, less
than 48 hours after his club lost
38-0 to St. Louis to mark the
first time since 1965 it had lost
two in a row, came in reply to
a question as to whether quar-
terback Craig Morton was on
the spot because of his inability, think I can work Out of It.”
to move the team. | Landry was also asked if he

Morton isn’t alone,”
“Do you feel that you are on
the spot?” another questioner
asked.
“A coach is always on the
spot” Landry shot back. "Yes,

Bob Foster
By WILLIAM VEBIGAN
DETROIT UPI — Joe Frasier
has proved it to Bob Foster,
and now his next battle will be
to prme to the world that he
really is the undisputed heavy-
weight champion in a show-
down against Cassius Clay.
The 26-vear-old Philadelphian
brushed away one more ob-
stacle standing between him
and a bout with Clay Wednes-
day night by slamming Foster
to the canvas for a three-min-
ute knockout at 49 seconds of
the second round.
But even in the aftermath of
victory. Frazier had to endure
the taunt "You can't never
beat Clay " It was a sorrowful
ending to a spectacular knock !
out.
Foster Ovt ( ofai
After taking the best light
* hand Foater. a noted right hand
hitter, could muster in the first
round. Frasier raged back to
knock down the light heavy-
weight champion with a com-
bination only 20 seconds into
the second round.
The 3l-year-o!d challenger,
who failed to become the first
light heavy king to movi up
to the big title, struggled to
hia feet at the count of nine and
triad to retreat But Frazier,
r mnkin' and anortin’ as prom-
ised, charged acroaa the ring,
trapped him against the ropes
and sized him up for the final
left hook.
After the smoke cleared. Foa-
ter lay on hia back as Dr. Ro-
bert Bennett worked feverish-
ly to re viva him. the 26th con-
secutive victim of the meat-
cleaver left of toe one-time
butcher,
"What About nay?”
"I told everybody there’s no
way Clay can beat you," Fos-
ter told Frazier later In toe
dressing room. "Clay hasn't
got nothing to keep you off.”
But the smile of jubilation
vanished from Frazier s face as
he left toe dressing room and
walked into a .leering cluster
of five or six fans, who drown-
ed out all toe cheers.
"What about Clay?" they
taunted. “Clay was watching
yeti on television, you bum. You
can't never heat Clay,”
Frasier ‘I’m Confident’
The jeers were merely an
echo of Clay, who shouted "I
want Frazier I want Frazier”
after watching the fight on tele-
vision in Atlanta.
Through tightened lips. Fra-
zier said softly to a friend, ’’I
ain't Blinking about him yet.
I’ll wait until after Clay fights
(Oscar) Bona vena. Bona vena's
got a ehanee to ruin any plans.”
Then he added. "It it comes
to it I'm confident I’ll beat
him ”
rinlv last February Frazier
gained the undisputed title by
beating Jimmy Ellis, but then
Clay, who had been barred
from boxing and stripped of toe
title in 1967 for refusing to be
inducted into the Army, was
allowed to make a comeback
and cloud the claim.
The bout with Clay, who is
currently appealing his draft
evasion conviction in the Sup-
reme Court, is tentatively sche-
duled for February if Clay
beats Bonavena on Dec. 7 and
doesn't run Into any setbacks
In court too soon.

Just read there are still
some 5,000 tickets for sale to
the traditional Thanksgiving
Day tilt between the Steers and
the Aggies in Austin. It had
been previously announced the
big turkey day football game
was sold out but it seems stu-
dent interest at both institu-

therefore those tickets are on
sale to the general, public. I
never thought the day would
come, no matter what the re-
cord at those two schools, when
that game at least would not
excite student interest. But.
there are many things going
