Cuero VFD Men’s Auxiliary disbands
Dear Editor,
Due to the loss of active mem-
bers and lack of interest in new
membership, the few remaining
active members of Cuero VFD
Mens Auxiliary have decided to
disband. This long standing group
will no longer be active.
It was decided to donate the
meal money that was left to be
given to the Blue Santa Project
and the Vietnam Veterans Post
1029 for their Memorial.

PLANS: Corporation has raised nearly $750,000 for new auditorium

“community center” that included
Little League fields, a rodeo arena,
auditorium, and other facilities
that would be a place to influence
children and their families.
Janet Smith was part of the ini-
tial effort and remains a driving
force today.
“Bert Marie and Burns
McAllister, Cecelia Schott, and I
would meet with churches and
civic organizations, sometimes two
a week, to gather support in the
community for this project,” Smith
said.
Around 1985, Robert Post, a local
attorney, worked with a good cross
section of county citizens and
helped them create a board and a
non-profit organization to continue
these efforts. The Cuero Dewitt
Community Development Corpor-
ation was developed and its pri-
mary fundraising effort, the Cuero
Christmas Tree, was initiated in
1986.
As the organization began to col-
lect contributions, some of its ini-
tial ideas were fulfilled.
“The Thomases donated the
funds to build the Friar Ag Center.
The City built the baseball and
soccer fields and a rodeo arena was
developed,” Smith said. “The only
thing really left that we haven’t
seen finished is an auditorium.”
With nearly $750,000 raised to
date, a building of this magnitude
will take some additional funding.
As the year closes, the community
is offered another opportunity to
assist this effort with a tax
deductible contribution.
For more information about this
truly “community” project, contact
board president, Rick Wheeler at
361-275-9193 or board treasurer
Janet Smith at 361-277-9506.
All contributions can be mailed
