COMING TO TERMS
In a recent novel ('Daughter of
Silence by Morris West), it is said
of a central character that she is
destroyed because “she did not
come to terms with life.”
How often we feel this is true
of people around us! They have
never come to terms with life.
They have never accepted them-

Thanksgiving without cranber-
ries is like turkey without dressing
. . . one is synonymous with the
other.
Too often, however, we serve this
colorful and tasteful fruit all by
itself, forgetting it is versatile and
can be a welcome addition to the
flavor and texture of assorted
mealtime treats.
In addition to their principal
role as a relish, cranberries go
well in baked goods, jellies, fresh,
frozen and gelatine salads, pud-
dings, punch, even gravies.
Two recipes particularly suited
to the Thanksgiving season is a
stuffing complementary to turkey,
chicken, duck or capon. Another
is a wonderfully textured bread,
chock full of fruit and nuts.
CRANBERRY STUFFING
4 cups finely diced celery
2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup minced onion
1/2 to 3/4 cups butter
4 quarts lightly packed day-old
bread crumbs
5 teaspoons poultry seasoning
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 cup uncooked cranberries,
chopped
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Simmer celery in boiling water,
covered, 15 to 20 minutes, or until
tender. Drain, reserving 1 cup
liquor. Cook onion in butter over
low flame until tender but nob
brown. Mix crumbs and seasonings
together, adding celery, celery
liquor, butter and onion, cranber-
ries, sugar and mix thooughly
with fork. Enough to stuff 10 pound
bird.
CRANBERRY NUT BREAD
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1^4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon (scant) baking soda
1 cup granulated sugar
1 orange
2 tablespoons shortening
1 egg, beaten
1 cup chopped nut meats
1 cup uncooked cranberries
Sift first five ingredients togeth-
er twice. Put juice and finely
chopped rind of orange in cup,
add shortening and fill remainder
of cup with boiling water to 3/4
cup full. Add with above and beat-
en egg to dry ingredients. Also
add chopped nut meats and halv-
ed cranberries. Bake in two small
loaf pans for one hour in preheat-
ed gas oven at 350 degrees F.
If desired, slice loaves horizont-
ally and spread with a sandwich
filling of cream cheese and or-
ange peel.
selves in terms of their own limi-
tations and possibilities. They have
never honestly faced their relation-
ships with others, in terms of
what they might give and what
they might receive. Most serious-
ly, they have never allowed them-
selves to be confronted by God
the Giver of Life, or to recognize
their obligations to Him.
Sometimes, when we attempt to
come to terms with life, we ex-
pect too much. We want to be
God ourselves, and to manage the
destiny of all those around us as
well as our own. We forget that
man is finite, not infinite; man is
sinful, not perfect. If we have
come to terms with life as it is
revealed to us in the Bible, and in
the teachings of Christ, we are
not surprised to find the reality of
sin either in ourselves or in oth-
ers. We know that man is a frail
creature needing all manner of
support and moral restraint, and
often needing forgiveness. We
know that the world is not divid-
ed into those who are morally
black and those who are morally
white. There is every shade in be-
tween! We learn to be patient with
others, even as we hope they will
be patient with us.
But sometimes the problem is
that we do not expect enough. We
may not always get what we want
from life, but it is important for
us to see how much life offers us
in the midst of our limitations and
unworthiness. There is so much
around us that is free if we have
the will to ask for it. Our human
role is limited, but it is full of
mystery, joy, and potential
achievement. If we want to be
God, we ask too much; but if we
refuse to be human, we ask too
little.
The wisdom of life is in finding
that happy area where God is God,
and where we are free to be all
that He meant us to be!

CUT OUT AND SAVE FOR YOUR TRAVELS
In the three minutes it takes
you to read this column you can
learn a few “tricks” that will save
you time and money in operating
your car, even if you’ve never lift-
ed a hood.
Overheated Radiator. You need
not hike to the nearest service
station if your car overheats be-
cause your radiator has run dry.
Wait until the heat gauge returns
to normal, then drive slowly to the
station. Stop if the gauge moves
near the “hot” position.
If you have water, let the engine
cool before pouring it in the radia-
tor, to avoid cracking the erigine
block. Idle the engine while you
pour.
Car Doesn’t Start. Great will be
your rejoicing if you turn your
ignition key and find that it wasn’t
turned fully to the on position; or
if you find that all you need is
gas. Great will be your humilia-
tion if you call a mechanic and
he discovers in 10 seconds that
one of these conditions caused your
“dead” engine.
Of course, your battery may be
dead, and you’ll need to charge
it or buy a new one. Or, your car-
buretor may be flooded—the logi-
cal problem if you smell gas. In
this event, merely press your ac-
celerator to the floor and hold it
there for a few seconds. Let your
foot up, put it down again—don’t
pump it—and turn the starter.
Stuck Horn. Hit the horn ring
sharply. If that doesn’t help, raise
the hood and remove the wires
from the horn.
No Brakes, After Driving
Through Water. The best solution
to this problem is prevention.
Hold your foot lightly on the brake
pedal as you’re driving through
the water. The resultant friction
heat keeps the brake linings dry,
Wet linings are the cause of your
brake slippage.
Even a little knowledge is very
helpful in operating a car. Next
time, do it yourself.
