ward journey.
The Buffs, after two weeks of
training, are rounding into top
shape and some of the most prom-
ising youngsters to show at the
Houston Park in many seasons will
be ready to go against the Eastern-
ers.
Ed Kazak, powerful youngster
from Albany, Ga„ where he belted
the ball at a .878 clip will be at
second base and the strapping
blonde promises to put in a real
bid for league slugging honors this
season.
Jimmy Hearn, Georgia Tech star
who left college at the close of the
1942 basketball season to report
for baseball, is another youngster
showing plenty of class. Although,
he has not previous pro experience,
Hearn handles his task at third
base in veteran fashion and he
carries a lot of power at the plate.
The games with Springfield will
start at 4 o’clock and will give fans
in th:- area a chance to see the
1942 Buff team in action.
Following the Houston-Spring-
ficld series the New York Giants
and the Cleveland Indians will be
in Houston for a Thursday, April
2 game. The game will be the lone
appearance of major league clubs
in this section in 1942 and will
start at 4:15.
Mel Ott, new Giant pilot and Lou
Boudreau, youngster major league
skipper, will have their regular
line-ups ready for the Houston ex
hibition.

Texas Appears Well On Way To
Another Conference Track Title
The University of Texas appears well on its way to another South-
west Conference track and field championship—the 15th in 22 years of
Clyde Littlefield coaching.
The Longhorns are not strong in the hurdles, dashes, and field
events this lime but have plenty of speed in the distance races.
Thus far, Texas has won the Border Olympics and the Southwest
Exposition Track and Field Meet at Fort Worth.
The next test comes this week-end in the Texas Relavs at Austin
A number of fans from this section is expected to attend.
In the other major spring sport, baseball, Texas as usual will be I
gunning for the title under the direction of Bibb Falk and that grand
ole man, Uncle Billy Disch. Although Disch has relinquished his duties
oi many years as active coach to Falk, he still hangs around Clark Field
to give out a few timely pointers to the hustling Longhorn aspirants.

Bay City’s crack 440-yard re-

meet last week-end. The team tied
with John Reagan of Houston for
tlj.rd and fourth places in the
event.
Incidentally, Lamar of Hous-

of 46.5 seconds in the event, the
same time the Black Cat flyers
were clocked in at Boling two
weeks ago in setting their record.

All brackets in the interscholastic
league have voted overwhelmingly
to base age regulations for partici-
pants on May 1 instead of Sept. 1,
effective in 1943.
The effect of a referendum, said
Athletic Director Rodney Kidd, was
to allow four additional months of
participation in borderline cases.
The new rule, which abolished
semester limitations, will read:
No one shall take part in any
contest in this league who, on the
first day of May preceding the con-
test, has reached or passed his
eighteenth birthday."
Kidd explained a hypothetical
case of a youth becoming 18 on
May 2. He would be eligible for an-
other year’s competition under the
newly approved rule because on
May 1 he would have been only 17.
Under the existing rule a youth
whose eighteenth birthday fails on
May 2 would be ineligible for an-
other year’s participation because
his eighteenth birthday would have
arrived Sept. 1,
The new rule was approved in
the AA conference by a vote of 69
to 14, in the A conference 192 to
25, in the B conference 392 to 59
and in the rural division 623 to 90.
Thus it carries into ail divisions,

Your Electric Refrigerator Saves You Money
Theodore Dienst of the United
States Navy is home on leave—
and enjoying it. He expects to
have at least a couple more weeks
here, maybe more.
Theodore told us of seeing his
brother, Vance, and Henry Fisher,
both in the Army, at Hawaii. The
threesome had quite a reunion
and, you guessed it, tha'r conver-
sation constantly drifted back to
their dear ole home town, Bav
