THIS NECROLOGY OF 1875,
From the Hanhibal Clipper.
The year just passed carried with
it many distinguished princes, states-
men and personages of note, of
whom our own country furnished its
share. We have only space to no-
tice our own distinguished dead:
January.—On the 1st died Dr.
Peleg Clark, of Rhode Island, for
sixty years an useful physician, aged
over yo. The next in our review
was Eber B. Ward, of Detroit, a
man worth foui millions, and whose
will has since been contested in the
courts on account of his spiritualis-
tic notions. Then came Maunsel
B. Field, of New York., distin-
guished as a jurist and a man of let-
ters. And last the eccentric George
Trask, of Massachusetts, having
been noted for his counterblasts
against tobacco.
February.—The deaths of this
month were: Nathan Sargent, fa-
mous a generation ago as a Wash-
ington correspondent, under the
name of Oliver Oldschool; Rear Ad-
miral C. H. Bell, U. S.N.; Simcoe
Kerr, Chief of the Six Nations, and
a decendeut of the Royal Governor
of New York, Sir William Johnson ;
and James Murphy, the Irish giant,
seven feet nine inches tall, who died
at Baltimore, aged 38.
A [arch.—Among the distinguished
dead of this month, were ex-Adju-
tant General Lorenzo Thomas, U.
S. A., aged 72; Mrs. Henry M.
Field, of New York, a woman whose
admirable temper and brilliant tal-
ents had made for her a very wide
acquaintance; Judge J. W. Long-
year, of Michigan ; Dr. A. D. Lord,
formerly Superintendent of the Ohio
Asylum for the bilnd; Dr. N. C.
Keep, dentist, of Boston, whose tes-
timony was the main evidence in es-
tablishing the identity of Dr. l’ark-
man’s remains, and consequently ot
convicting Dr. Webster of his mm
der.
April.—The notable dead of th e
month ivm-p • ( 'nimnndnre Low
Fitch, U. S. N.; John Harper, of
Harper & Pro’s. ; Gov. A. J. Hamil-
ton, of Texas, and S. R. Wells, the
New York phrenologist.
May—Has but one noted death,
that ot Joseph E. Babscn, (“Tom
Folio,”) a literary man of Boston,
noted as a collector of the stray ef-
fusions of great writers.
Jnne.—The necrology of this
month includes Samuel G. Drake,
the antiquarian publisher, of Boston ;
the lion, and Rev. C. W. Upham,
bttter known as the author of a his-
tory of the Salem witchcraft excite-
ment than as a clergyman or Con-
gressman, and Mortimer Thompson,
once famous under the norn deplume
of “Doesticks."’
July.—Death was easy on the
world’s great and 1 ich this month,
[and we have but one name to men-
tion—that of Isaac M, Singer, of
sewing machine fame.
August.—Dip ing this month there
died: Alexandet Hamilton, aged
90. son and namesake of the great
statesman ; ex-President C. G. ITu-
ner, otObcrlin ; W. C. Ralston, the
California banker, at d Prof. Don-
aidson, aeronaut.
September.—This month’s -ne-
crology includes the Rev. Dr. E. G.
Gillet."author of Life of IIuss, and
other theological works; Mrs. Emi-
ly Bliss Gould, the American bene-
factress of Roman children, and
Joel Parker, cx-Professor of Law in
Harvard University and ex-Supreme
judge of New 11 amps hire.
October.—We note only the death
of Rev. Kingston Goddard, and
Frederick Hudson, of the New \ ork
Herald.
November.— The most notable
among the dead of this month is
Wm.1l. Astor, the American Crm-
! sms.
1 December.—The deaths ot this
month include Thomas H. Key. for-
merly a Professor in the University
of Virginia : J- Ross Brown-, t-e

This fifteen year old letter of |
Horace Greeley’s lias just got into
print, written in reply to an inquiry
as to what he thought about spir-
itualism :
“I have been satisfied that some of
the demonstrations I have seen of
what are called spiritualism are im
polled by an unseen force not ac-
counted for by any law of physics
wherewith I am acquainted. That
thev are the work of our departed
friends whose names they invoke,
I am not satisfied. I do not say
that they are not; hut of the testi-
mony I have had on that point, the
stronger portion seemed to negative
the spiritual hypothesis.”
