The old Florence Hotel building of
Coleman, once famous hostelry of
the west, is being raied to the
ground. This old building is linked
with the early history of the town,
the material used in its construction
being freighted in the seventies
from Round Rock, Texas.
The property was recently sold by
R. W. Gray, of the firm of Gray*
Hicks Company, to W. H. Stephens
of Albany, The lot is being floated
of the old wooden building to make
room for a prospective modem hotel.
Mr, Gray received in consideration
j for the hotel property an improved
section of land on Panther creek
abutting the town of Vos*. The
trade, which has been in process for
several weeks, was finally closed
the past week ami the exchange of
deeds made.

Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Laughlin, aged
61 and 56, arrived in Ballinger Mon-
day on the Abilene A Southern from
Bradshaw and engaged a room at a
local hotel. They carried a suit case
and later the hotel man overheard a
baby crying in the room. The hotel
man did not see a baby with the cou-
ple when they arrived and he tele-
phoned officers and set up an investi-
gation.
It developed that Laughlin and
his wife left the home where the
baby wan born in Winters with the
infant, and brought it to Ballinger,
locked in a suit case. They told the
officers, upon further investigation,
that their twenty year old daughter
was the mother of the baby and
that it was born .Sunday at Winters
They stated further that they were
taking the child to Buckner's Orphan
Home.
The officer* advised them to return
to the mother with th? child at once.
Later, Mr. and Mrs. E, D. Hadert of
Ballinger made application for the
privilege of raising the child and the
papers necessary to the transfer were
executed find the child turned over
to its foster parents.

As a result of the war in Europe
it is stated the Jews in Palestine are
facing starvation. Many of the
thousands who reside in Jerusalem,
having gathered there from many
countries from religious motives, are
very aged and dependent people
Before the war they received remit
tanees for their support from their
datives residing in various countries
if the world. Many of these latter
>re now fighting in the ranks of the
armies of Europe. Others, on ac-
count of the war, have found their
revenues so reduced that they are
unable to make the usual remit-
tances. Hence the suffering in Pale
stine is reported to be very acute.
Maurice Wertheim, a son-in-lww of
Henry Morgenthau, U. S. ambassa
dor to Turkey, has just returned to
New York from Palestine, where he
delivered to the Jews there a fund
of $50',000.00 raised for their
relief in the United States. Much
more will be needed to meet their
necessities.
