attends
confab
Palacios Band Directors
Richard Shanks attended the
annual Texas Bandmasters
Association Convention and
Clinic in San Antonio July 30 •
August 1.
In addition to the many
clinics, lectures and demon-
strations available, of special
interest to Shanks was the new
music reading sessions. These
sessions were performed by
the Air Force Band of the West
of which one of the trombon-
ists was Garland Nolen, a past
student of Shank’s from San
Benito.
Also attending the conven-
tion, escorted by Mrs. Richard
Shanks, was Miss Janet Heg-
wood, band director at Kirk-
land Central High School, New
Mexico, also an ex-student of
Shanks.
As representative for the
State of Texas as state chair-
man, Shanks also attended the
National American School
Band Director's Association
annual convention in Oklaho-
ma City, Okla., August 2-5.
Shanks has served as Texas
state chairman for the past
seven years.

Bible School record
The Church of Christ, meet-
ing at 6th & Rorern has again
beaten its own record in
Vacation Bible School atten-
dance, with 146 average per
day, a good increase over the
126 average last year; 98 with
perfect attendance in compari-
son to 91 in 1977.
130 attended Open House.

graduation at Texas State

More than 7000 officers and
men of the Texas National
Guards were at Camp Hulen
for the two week training
period.
The Palacios Sharks defeat-
ed the Bay City Oilers in a
double-header.
Tom Friery of Houston was
a new employee at the Price
Lumber Company.
Rupert Elliott received his
M.A. degree from Baylor
University. He was teaching
school at Wadsworth.

Salt water in canals delayed
irrigation of rice fields in the

The Harbison barn, east of
Palacios, was struck by light-
ning the burned to the ground.

All business houses were
closed during the Memorial
Services held for the late
president, Warren G. Hard-
ing, in the B.Y.P.U. auditor-
ium.
The schools of Collegeport
and DeMoss were consoli-
dated. R.E. Coffin was super-
intendent and Misses Beulah
Price and Marjorie Berger of
Palacios and Merle Warner of
Bay City were teachers.
