of the facts available.
By equipping fantasy fig-
ures with human powers, at
least in the boy's mind, this
mother had stolen from him
the ability to disregard comic
heroes as the product of an
artist's fertile imagination.
She may have made a lasting
impression on the child but, I
wonder if that impression is
the one she hoped to create.
It is every parent's right
(rather, responsibility) to
monitor the impressions left
on our young children by
outside influences, whether
by television, friends, teach-
ers, preachers or other fam-
ily members. But, rather
than shield them completely
from such outside influ-
ences, shouldn't we share
differing ideas with our chil-
dren, and teach them how to
deal with such notions in a
responsible manner?
After all, the first, best,
and most remembered
teacher your child will ever
have is- you.
If we trust teachers to
educate our youngsters;
preachers to illuminate
them; law enforcement to
irotect our children; and
egislators to rule them, we
may as well drop them in the
jungle and let the apes raise
them.
Come to think of it, Tarzan
was quite well-mannered,
compared to some young-
sters I've known!
