Stooe said when the
Kinbrough's were told that
their application would apply
not only to the small building
where the shop was to be
located but also the the
residence near-by the
Kimbroughs wrhdrew their
application. Leaving no
action for the commission to
take.
Selers told the council
liial she had explained U>
those with objections what
type of commercial place
was to be put in and that
there was sufficient off
street parking. She said aD
objections were dropped.
Folowing a motion that
died for the lack of a second,
by Alderman Pat Starns to

Corrections &
Amplifications
Last week the Bastrop
Advertiser reported that the
Smithvle City Counci had
given Police Chief Tommy
K. Smith “permission_to
hie an additional person for
the city's police depart-
ment"
Monday night Smith vilie
Mayor Lawerence SkeBey
corrected that report “We
did not give authorizaation
to hre a policeman. This
was a procedural move on
the part of the council. This
gave the police chief the
authority to hire in the fu
ture, after checking with me,
should the need arise. This
keeps the chief from having
to wait 30 days to receive
permission from the coun-
cil.”

Dear Editors: ,
SaL, Oct. 18, will be rem
embered by many as "the
day the rains came”.
The members and friends
of The Heart of the Pines
Association will remember
Oct 18 as the day they
showed their true spirit and
determination not to let a
mere thunderstorm upset
the plans for their B-B-Q in
Buescher State Park.
The turnout of over 100
people, including the guests
from the Bluebonnet Volun-
teer Fire Department with
their Texas Blizard foam
fire truck, managed to
make the affair a success
from an educational fellow-1
ship, and enjoyment stand-
point
Our sincere thanks to all
the people that worked so
hard to make the affair a
success, as well as those
that braved the cold, wet
day to show their interest in
and support for the organi-
zation.

There mu be
a better way
The Texas election ballot is no way to hold an election.
We come to that conclusion after studying a sample Nov. 4
ballot we obtained from Bastrop County Clerk Lucille
Fraim. (The ballot appears on Page 8 of this newspaper to
help you prepare to vote).
First, most voters never get to see a sample ballot before
they go to the polling place unlike some other states where
samples are mailed to each registered voter in advance of
the election, giving time to study the complicated form.
Second, the way the ballot is set up, it may appear to
some that they have to vote for all the Democratic
candidates or all the Republican candidates, like in a
primary. It may not be clear that instead they can jump
back and forth between the offerings of the two parties,
picking and choosing. It might be better to list all the
candidates together for each office in separate boxes.
Third, aD nine of the baUot propositions are amendments
to the state constitution. Some of them are exceedingly
complicated and a few only of interest to lawyers. We defy
the average voter to figure out how to vote on some of
these complex issues. They should not be on the ballot in
the first place. Why can't the nuts and bolts of how state
government is organized be left to the Legislature with the
people voting mainly on policy questions? Amending the
state constitution over every issue that somes along is a
mistake. In this case it’s a mistake that the public asks for
since efforts to get a streamlined Constitution have all failed
and we are stuck with a cumbersome process few
understand or like_
