Monica Flores, of
Victoria County and for-
merly of Refugio, and
other cancer survivors and
caregivers were honored
by the American Cancer
Society High Plains
Division with the 2012
Hero of Hope Award.
The award recognizes
28 cancer survivors and
caregivers who have had
exemplary involvement
with Relay For Life, made
significant contributions
to cancer control, and
made an impact in the
lives of others.
The American Cancer
Society selected Flores
and others from across
six states representing
14 regions. The honor-
ees selected symbolize
the courageous struggle
against cancer as they
and family members deal
with the physical and
emotional aspects of their
experience. They repre-
sent courageous voices of
hope.

It’s a girl!
Jimmy and Lisa
Kennedy of Woodsboro
announce the birth of
their daughter Lexi Ryan
Kennedy at 11:14 a.m. on
Wednesday, May 4, 2011,
at Spohn South in Corpus
Christi.
Lexi weighed 7 lbs., 4
oz., and was 20 inches
long.
She was welcomed home
by her sister Raleigh, 11.
Maternal grandparents
are Danny and Roberta
Fagan of Woodsboro;
and Bubba Hobbs of
Woodsboro.
Paternal grandpar-
ents are Jim and Paula
Kennedy of Nixon.
Great-grandparents
are Del Hobbs of
Refugio; Robert Shipp
of Woodsboro; Mrs.
Earl Kennedy of Nixon;
and Wayne McLeod of
Seguin.
This month’s Member
of the Month, Scanio,
Teer, Cox and Steele, has
had a presence in our
community for more than
60 years. Their practice
is built primarily on civil
matters including real
estate, probate, oil field
and trusts. The firm has
been a positive factor is
giver to Xavier, her son
who was diagnosed with
Neuroblastoma in 2009
and has undergone treat-
ment at Texas Children’s
hospital.
Thanks to the research
that ACS has been able
to provide, Xavier has
been monitored closely
and has been cancer free
since November, 2010
after surgery. ACS has
played a vital role in their
cancer journey.
“The Hero of Hope
Award provides a highly
visible symbol of one’s
courageous fight against
cancer as well as encour-
ages support and partici-
pation in the programs of
the Society,” says Sheila
Blankenship, survivor
and team chair of the
American Cancer Society
Relay For Life Hero.
Each hero will receive
their award at a special
ceremony during the
Relay For Life Leadership
Summit held in Dallas
later this fall.

Greenhouse
medals for
charity in
5K run
Team Greenhouse run-
ners earned honors in
four categories in the
Ingleside Fire Corps. 5K
run in Ingleside Saturday,
May 14.
Refugio seventh grader
Kenny Moore took second
with a time of 26.04 in
the 14-year-old and under
category.
The ladies took three
second place wins and one
third.
Second place winners
include Debra Moore with
a 35.22 time in the 34-39
year-old division; Terry
Rocha, 35.22, in the 40-44
division; and Jamie Soto,
36.34 in the 25-29 divi-
sion.
Deb Weber, came in
third at 56.16 in the 55-59
year-old division.
Relay for Life

mittee planning meeting
will be held Monday, May
23 at 5:30 p.m. at the
First United Methodist
Church.

11:30 a.m. to answer ques-
tions and be available to
any veteran, or a spouse

Gary W. Thomas, 54,
died May 6, 2011.
He was born on Sept.
12, 1956, in Refugio.

of Utah; sister, Patricia
F. Durst of Woodsboro;
brother, James W.

May 10, at 10 a.m. at
Oakwood Cemetery in
Refugio.
Wallace
Michelle Dianne
Wallace, 43, of Refugio
died Sunday, May 15,
2011. She was a mem-
ber of the First Baptist
Church of Refugio. She
fought cancer for more
than two years.
She was born on Dec.
28, 1967,
in San
Antonio.
She is
preceded
in death by
her father,
Charles
Massengill; Wallace
and a broth-
er, Clifford Massengill.
Survivors include
her mother, Jacqueline
Morrison of Beeville; two
daughters, Kallie Greenly
and husband Marcus,
and Julie Wallace, all of
Refugio; two sons, Andrew
Wallace and Tobias
Bullock, both of Refugio;
two sisters, Boni Mays
of Fayetteville, N.C., and

Madison, Ala.; two broth-

A memorial service will
be conducted Saturday,
May 28, at 10 a.m. at the
First Baptist Church in
Refugio.
