Quad-City tourney set for May 21
The weather contin-
ues to be dry despite the
little amount of rain we
had last week. So far
Neal Haertig has kept
the greens in nice shape
and he has watered on
the fairways a few times
each week. However, the
fairways are dry and rain
is needed badly to help
them along. I know the
farmers need rain and so
do the ranchers. Let’s
hope that we have more
soon.
We have done some
remodeling on our game
room. There are now
games to play there.
Come out and try them.
The next Quad-City golf
tournament will be held
in Goliad this Saturday,
May 21. Those who are
interested should take
Blotter
Klubhouse
klios
note.
We extend our sympa-
thies to Neal and Linda
Haertig and to Robert
Haertig and family for the
loss of Gaviran Haertig.
She passed away two
weeks ago after a long ill-
ness. She was the wife of
Robert and the daughter-
in-law of Neal and Linda.
Here are the results of
the last two After Work
Scrambles. Two weeks
ago the winning team
was Clint Bingenheimer,
Ross Havard, Dave
Smith, C. J. Sloan, and
Claude Freeman They
shot a 6 under par 29.
Last Wednesday’s win-
ners were the team of
John Wiginton, Brent
Wiginton, Willie Haertig,
and Robert Heartig.
They, too, shot a 29.
Golf Joke of the Week:
On the first tee of an
unfamiliar golf course a
golfer swung at the ball
and missed. He said,”
That’s interesting, this
course must be two inches
lower than mine.”
And here’s a thought
for all golfers: When
your shot has to go over
a water hazard, you can
either use one more club
or two more balls.
Sheriff Robert Bolcik
reported 2,586 calls went
through dispatch from
May 2 to May 16.
The sheriffs depart-
ment responded to 87
calls; the Refugio Police
Department, 41; State
Troopers, 12; Woodsboro
Marshal, 11; medics, 17;
Refugio VFD, one; animal
control, 13.
Bailout
Deputy Shelly Haertig

The driver drove through
the fence and continued to
drive around out in the pas-
ture. A 911 caller reported
that he saw the deputy
attempt to pull that vehicle
over and watched the driv-
er go through the pasture.
The driver pulled back on
the roadway and headed
westbound on Hwy. 239
going towards 59. Deputy
Jason Maley reported
the vehicle went through
another fence. Trooper
Cesar Villarreal set up
a strip. Chief Sheldon
Wiginton requested that
Sgt. Jeremy Rowland con-
tact DPS Corpus to get
a helicopter to launch if
available. The vehicle was
located in a field and all
the passengers, including
two adults and one child
escaped.
Foot pursuit
A DPS trooper pur-
sued suspected illegal
aliens on foot approxi-
mately one mile north
of Refugio on May 7 at
12:59 a.m. Deputy Daniel
Beltran and Officer Bill
Schaefer were dispatched
to assist the trooper who
advised three suspects
were in custody and oth-
ers were being pursued.
One of the suspects was
taken to Refugio Memorial
Hospital and was bleeding
from the mouth. He was
also pepper sprayed. Two
illegal suspects were taken
to the county jail and DPS
Sgt. Villarreal advised
they had one more in cus-
tody and two were still in
the brush, including one
pregnant female. The two
subjects were found and
both were transported to
Refugio County Jail. The
female was taken to the
hospital to be checked out.

assault causing bodily
injury on May 7 around
2:54 a.m. fled the scene

The caller reported that
the male subject was leav-

the area, but were unable
to find him.

recovered parapher-
nalia at a residence in
Woodsboro on May 13 a
8:45 p.m. A caller reported
that she had been looking
after some property that
belongs to her brother. She
reported that the people
who rented the proper-
ty were supposed to be
moved out and the new
renter was there to look
at the property. The new
renter reported damage
to the property and para-
phernalia at the residence.
Deputy Ramirez located
the paraphernalia and
stored it at the sheriffs
office. Sgt. Glen Grasham
reported he went by the
residence and located more
paraphernalia.
Car crash
A two-vehicle accident
was reported by one of
the victims on May 14
around 5:33 p.m. on FM
136. The caller advised she
had rear-ended another
vehicle. Deputy Ronald
Ramirez, medics, Bayside
Fire Department, and
DPS Trooper Francisco
Hosking were dispatched.
Another caller reported
that another vehicle may
have caused the accident.
The caller said he was
fishing and saw the vehi-
cle turn into Bayside. The
third vehicle was located at
Bayside Grocery. Deputy
Ramirez reported the pas-
senger of the vehicle was a
16-year-old who does not
have a license.
Assault
Deputies were dis-
patched to the Mission
River Oaks Apartments
where a female victim was
reportedly assaulted by
her boyfriend on May 13
at 2:21 a.m. The alleged
assailant had left the
residence when officers
arrived. Deputy Beltran

female had a broken nose,
her eyes were bloodshot

Bobcat JV finish season undefeated
Cats tally 4th-straight undefeated district championship
The Refugio Junior
Varsity baseball team
finished the regular sea-
son with an unblemished
record in both district and
non-district play. For the
fourth straight year, the
JV Cats are the district
champions. In the sea-
son finale, the Cats shut
out the Odem Owls, 7-0;
and blasted the Bishop
Badgers, 9-3.
“The Bobcats faced
tough opposition through-
out the year but through
hard work and a resilien-
cy to lose they remained
undefeated,” said Coach
Anthony Quintanilla.
The JV Bobcat accolades
for the year include the
Alice tournament cham-
pionship, the Victoria
tournament companion-
ship, Skidmore tourna-
ment championship, and
district championship.
The Bobcat JV team
was 20-0 on the season
while remaining unde-
feated in district contest
for 4 straight years.
“The freshman squad
fought through struggles
and loss of players val-
iantly,” Quintanilla said.
The freshman team
stayed above .500 and
went 7-5.
In the final two games
the JV Bobcats faced off
against its toughest foes
in district play in Bishop
and Odem.
“Though they had
already gained at least a
share of the district title
the Cats felt the urge to
keep its undefeated sea-
son and untouched four
years of district play,”
Quintanilla said.
In the season finale
Refugio traveled to Odem
after a week’s break to
take on the Owls who were
hot with their only loss
coming from Bishop. It
would take a few innings
for Refugio to shake off
the rust from not playing
in a week as they scat-
tered runs throughout the
game. The Bobcats never
faltered on defense and
shut out the Owls.
Outstanding defensive
plays came from Colton
Carroll, Jack Gumm,
Draigon Silvas, Andre
Firova, Jake Henderson,
Dante Leal, Omar Flores,
John Wesley Shipp, and
Cameron Sternadel.
On the flip side for the
Bobcats, Brett Wernli was
1-1, with 1 run; Shipp
was 2-2, with 1 run, and 2
RBI; Carroll was 1-1, with
1 RBI; Henderson was
1-2, with 2 runs; Flores
was 1-2, with 1 run, and
Sternadel was 1-2, with
1 run.
The Bishop Badgers
came to Refugio with
intentions of knocking off
the Bobcats to blemish
their undefeated seasons.
The Badgers produced the
first scores of the game
off sound hitting and con-
tained the potent Bobcat
attack through excellent
pitching in the beginning
innings.
However, Refugio’s
offense jolted to life in the
third inning manufactur-
ing seven runs, and two
home-runs from Shipp
and Henderson.
AN IDOL IN
THE MAKING
Woodsboro senior David
Meza, recently auditioned
for the Corpus Christi Idol at
Corpus Christi Texas A&M
University. The fund raiser was
to benefit the drama depart-
ment at the university. A musi-
cian, David said the audition
was not only fun but a great
experience.
