Quesada
WOODSBORO
Fernando Quesada, 78,
died Thursday, Aug. 15,
2013, at Baptist Medical
Center in San Antonio.
Mr. Quesada was born
Sept. 9, 1934, to Jose
and Victoria Quesada in
Mexico. He worked for
Welder and McCan Ranch
as a cook and ranch hand
for many years before
moving to Fort Myers,
Fla., as a harvester. He
moved back to Woodsboro
a year ago.
He was preceded in
death by his parents, two
brothers and a son-in-
law, Manuel Lopez.
Survivors include his
wife, Dolores Quesada; 12
step-children; second ex-
wife, Elvia P. Quesada;
their three daughters,
Gidget (Tim) Joiner of
Cleveland, Gloria (John)
Canchola of Refugio and
A.J. Lopez of Woodsboro;
two sons, Joe-E
(LaQuisha) Quesada
of Landcaster, Pa. and
Daniel (Elizabeth)
Quesada of Goliad; first
ex-wife, Beatriz Zaragoza
Diaz; their three daugh-
ters, Elvia Quesada, and
Olga (Jose) Rojo and
Condelaria Quesada, both
of Fort Myers, Fla.; three
sons, Fernando (Mayra)
Quesada Jr., of Fort
Myers, Fla., and Martin
and Eddie Quesada of
Mexico; numerous grand-
children; and 21 great-
grandchildren.
The rosary was recit-
ed Monday, Aug. 19, at
Moore Funeral Home
Chapel.
The funeral Mass
was celebrated Tuesday
at St. Therese Catholic
Church. Burial followed
at St. Bernard Cemetery
in Woodsboro.

Mrs.
Wallace
was born
Oct. 12,
1930, in Wallace
Freer, to
Dee and Anna Waits.
She graduated from
Kingsville A&I and was
a teacher for 30 years in
Woodsboro and Victoria
school districts. She was
a active member of the
First Baptist Church
of Refugio, head of the
Vacation Bible School for
many years and worked
at the Good Samaritan
Center in Refugio. She
also was involved in
the Retired Teacher
Association. She was one
of three grannies of the
Refugio Football Fans.
She was preceded in
death by her husband,
Leon Wallace; and a
daughter, Susan Perez.
Survivors include two
daughters, Margaret
(Brad) Carver of Victoria
and Selma (Scott)
Andrewartha of Taylor;
two sons, John (Theresa)
Barger of Baytown and
David Barger of Lansing,
Mich.; a sister, Mary Ann
(Ernest) Hoffman of New
Braunfels; 10 grandchil-
dren; and eight great-
grandchildren.
Visitation was held
from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday,
Aug. 20, at Moore Funeral
Home Chapel.
The funeral service was
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
at First Baptist Church
of Refugio. Burial was in
Oakwood Cemetery.

D. Barger, Jared Barger
and Zack Perez.

Sara Reid Massey
passed away from
metastatic breast cancer
on her seventy-fifth
birthday, August 17,
at the home of her son
and daughter-in-law,
Reid “Todd” and April
Massey, in Comfort
TX. Sara was born
to A1 Moses Reid and
Stella Deitz Reid in
Aberdeen, South Dakota
on August 17, 1938 and
grew up on their farm
in Ohio. She graduated
from the University of
Colorado and earned a
master’s degree from the
University of Denver in
history focused on the
American West and a
doctorate in humanistic
education from the
University of Northern
Colorado. Sara remained
a learner throughout
her life traveling
around the world,
accompanied often by
her granddaughter
Marissa Massey Hurley
of Center Point.
Sara taught in the
Denver Public Schools
and then moved to
Maine, where her family
had often vacationed, to
work at the University of
Southern Maine and to
found the New England
Institute in Education
where she directed
the New England
Teacher Corps Network.
Returning west, she
was an associate
professor of education
at Incarnate Word
College in San Antonio
and then became a
curriculum specialist on
the Hopi reservation in
Arizona for ten years.
Sara later worked as an
education specialist at
the Institute of Texan
Cultures. Her cultural
explorations resulted
in many publications
including those which
she developed and edited
- “The Black Cowboys of
Texas” which received
the T.R. Fehrenbach
Book Award of the Texas
Historical Commission
and “Texas Women
on the Cattle Trails”
which received the Liz
Carpenter Award of the
Texas State Historical
Association - and her
recent independent
study, “Never Far
from the Sea: The
Vietnamese of the Texas
Gulf Coast,” which
received the Community
History Award from
the Texas Oral History
Association.
Retiring to her home
in Austwell TX, Sara
was an active member of
several regional history
groups, a novice painter
who traveled to France
to study, a collaborator
on a series of
biographies for children
and the developer of
countless ideas for
projects that would
add to multicultural
understanding. She
leaves her son Todd and
her daughter-in-law
April who have lovingly
cared for her, her former
husband Robert Massey,
her granddaughter
Marissa and her
husband Jason Hurley,
her great grandson
Luke Hurley and a circle
of close friends across
the country. Memorial
contributions in Sara’s

Voice of Democracy
Contest begins
Now that school will be
in full swing next week
throughout the county,
the VFW has opened
the annual Voice of
Democracy Contest.
Every student grades
9-12 are eligible to com-
pete in the contest. The
theme for the Voice of
Democracy this year is
“Why I Am Optimistic
About Our Nation.”
Entry forms are avail-
able at each high school
counselor’s office for stu-
dents who are interested
or need more information.
Students must record
their reading of the draft
to a CD. The recording
can be no shorter than
three minutes and no lon-
ger than five. Submit the
typed version, CD and the
Voice of Democracy entry
form to the VFW Post
6290.
High School seniors
who enter the competition
will be eligible to apply
for the VFW Scholarship
awarded at the end of the
school year.
