Game room rules
on tap for
(Continued from 1A)
game room operators
to turn in permit stick-
ers on machines that
are broken or being
replaces in order to get
a new sticker.
The amendment
would state if a game
room operator can-
not produce a permit
sticker, then he or she
would have to pay for a
new permit.
None of the propos-
als for amendments
have been adopted.
The council is expect-
ed to consider action
on the game room ordi-
nance amendments in
early November.
The council also
approved prorating 34
gaming machine per-
mits for Ray Niehal,
owner of Scores Game
Room.
Niehal had 91 days
left on the lost permits,
so he was charged a
prorated fee of $124.66
per machine. He had
bought the permits
when the fee was $500
a machine.
The current gam-
ing machine permit
fee is $1,000 for each
machine.
The council also
approved its 20-13-
15 depository, grant-
ing the First National
Bank ofWoodsboro the
designation.
The council also
approved a 5 percent
raise for its employees.
Only three employ-
ees base salary was
raised, including Viola
Mesa, Jimmy Lewis
and DeLaGarza.
Austwell acknowledges letter
of resignation from inspector
(Continued from 1A)
“He was a very good
inspector and worked
with people, and he made
suggestions. We are going
to miss him,” Cann said.
Two residents will be
contacted to see if they
are interested in the posi-
tion: Eric Kurecka and
Henry Lerma.
The council agreed not
to accept Henry’s letter of
resignation until Jan. 31.
City Secretary Melissa
Hopper announced that
a Halloween party will be
held at the city park at 5
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30,
for kids K through 12.
Hot dogs, chips and a
drink will go for $3, and
candy will be handed out.
A costume contest for
the kids will have a $25
first prize gift card, a $15
second prize and a $10
third prize gift card.
Also, the council
approved closing the
city park from dusk till
dawn because of vandal-
ism. Water will be cut off
duing that time.
A no trespassing sign
will be put up for that
period, as well.
“If it continues, we will
have to put up some night
security up,” Cann said.
The Refugio County
Sheriffs Office was noti-
fied about the new park
regulations.

Mountie starts duties in Corpus Christi
Contributed photo
Teresa Lucich's horse, Lady, received her police badge upon
completing training with the Dallas Mounted Police. Teresa and
Lady are one team of two mounted police units in Corpus Christi.
(Continued from 1A)
Lucich scored 100 on it.
She made a 94 on
the riding exam, which
involved 18 different
maneuvers.
The two exams were
averaged for a final score.
A perfect score was 116.
Lucich and her partner
Chris Lynch passed the
tests. And their horses
were given police badg-
es, becoming the first
horses to belong to the
Corpus Christi Police
Department.
Now, the city of Corpus
Christi is purchasing a
horse trailer, but Lucich
said she will let Lynch
use it because she has one
to use.
“My goal is to have the
city be able to provide sta-
bles and horses,” Lucich
said.
She said Police Chief
Floyd Simpson wants
to add two more to the
mounted police.
“But I don’t know when
that is going to happen,”
she said.
For now, with new
police badges, the mount-
ed patrol appeared in
downtown Corpus Christi
and on North Beach.
Lucich said the plan is
to patrol the beach dur-
ing spring break and at
the malls during holi-
days. She added that the
patrol would be used dur-
ing events like the breast
cancer run, Palmer Drug
Abuse walk at Cole Park
and other crowd events.
The usual uniform
will be jeans and cow-
boy hats. However, the
formal uniform is more
along the lines of the
Royal Canadian Mounted
Police formal uniform,
said Lucich.
And formal occasions
always arise, said the
14-year veteran of the
Corpus Christi police
force.
“I’m really proud of
myself to finish the
course. It’s not an easy
thing for an older person
in her 40s. That’s a young
person’s course.”
Lucich said she’s loved
horses since she was a
little girl.
But she never dreamed
that one day she’d “get to
ride a horse on my job.”
