Hoisting petards
definitely dangerous

Eric Ray, curator at the Museum of the Coastal Bend in Victoria, answers questions about La
Salle's ship, La Belle, and about petards Saturday, Nov. 9, during the Bayside Historical Society's
quarterly presentation.

BAYSIDE - Petard: a rarely-used
word that derives from the French
language, meaning a small bomb.
The French explorer, Rene-Robert
Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, or sim-
ply Robert LaSalle, knew all about
petards.
After all, the 17th century bombs
known as petards were found aboard
his ship, La Belle, which sunk in
February 1686 during a windstorm in
Matagorda Bay, according to Eric Ray,
current curator of exhibits and collec-
tions at the Museum of the Coastal
Bend in Victoria.
Ray, who has a master’s degree
in shipwreck archaeology from East
Carolina University, Greenville, S.C.,
was the featured presenter at the
Bayside Historical Society’s quar-
terly presentation and meeting on
Saturday, Nov. 9.
Ray was at the Corpus Christi
Museum of Science and History,
working for the Texas Historical
Commission, when he re-catalogued
1.8 million items from the La Belle,
over the span of a couple of years.
Among those items, he identified
eight pots - artifacts in the ship’s
cargo - that looked like they could be
petards.
The pots were X-rayed and were
found to have something else inside.
Ray described the petards as a
ceramic chamber pot (the cheapest
pottery one could purchase) filled with
gunpowder. He called them “fire pots.”
Inside the pot’s gunpowder was an
iron grenade, also filled with gun-
powder. A cork was used to seal the
gunpowder in the pot, and a slow fuse
was atop the cork.
Ray believes the pot was some kind
of explosive weapon.
Ray said he could not find anything
that explained how the petard worked
or for what it was used in battle.
“These were composite ceramic-iron
explosives. What’s the point? Why did
they have them on the La Belle?” he
asked.
So, Ray said he sought to experiment
by making replicas of the petards.

REFUGIO - About 55 people
attended an early morning appre-
ciation breakfast to honor all Refugio
County veterans on Monday, Nov. 11.
Refugio County Judge Rene
Mascorro asked those in attendance,
“what does Veterans Day really mean
to you?”
“Remember the sacrifice, hard work
- everything it takes to defend this
country,” Mascorro said.
He said our military ultimately
defends our way of life.
He added that what veterans do
does not always involve war.
He pointed out that our military
is in the Philippines helping people
recover from the typhoon that tore
through the country and killed thou-
sands.
“They’re helping people at their
worst moment in life,” he said.
Mascorro thanked all the veterans
at the breakfast and elsewhere in the
county. He said the military ensures
that our country is a place of “welcom-
ing” and an environment conducive
for families to experience the great-
ness of our country.
Mascorro also promised he would
write a letter to our congressman urg-
ing Congress to approve pensions for
all veterans serving from Vietnam to
the Korean War.
The issue was brought up by the
county Veterans Service Officer,
Richard Sanchez.
“We’re pushing for pensions for all
veterans from the Korean War back to
the Vietnam War,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez had veterans of various
wars stand up and be recognized,
including World War II, the Korean
War, the Vietnam War, the Persian
Gulf War, the Iraqi War and the war
in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Marine Corps was also
recognized for its 238th birthday on
Nov. 10.

Free turkey dinners to be served

REFUGIO - Dan Griswold laughs
when people ask him if he is related
to Clark from the movie “Vacation.”
“My last name is spelled the same
way, but no,” he says, smiling.
The character Clark Griswold had
a litany of bad luck incidents dur-
ing his travels from Chicago to Los
Angeles, with destination theme park
Wally World. He wanted quality time
with his family on vacation, but he
failed at every turn.
But Dan Griswold, 70, says he has
been fortunate all his life. And that’s
why he’s planned a Thanksgiving
Day dinner giveaway.
Dan was born in Canada on the St.
Regis Reservation.
“Yes, I’m a Canuck (slang for
Canadian),” Griswold said.
