Commission seeks to restore old jail
By Tim Delaney
County Press Editor
REFUGIO - The Refugio County
Historical Commission will seek bids
for the restoration of the historical
Tivoli Jail.
The determination took place at
the commission’s meeting Tuesday,
Nov. 12.
Commissioner Bart Wales noted
that there has been some difficulty
in getting a bidder for the project,
which involves carpentry and foun-
dation work.
Chair of the commission, Rosemary
Kelley, said inscriptions for two 2012
historical markers are in the process
of being made.
Wales gave an overview of the
Texas Tropical Trail upcoming meet-
ings.
He said Weslaco is the destination
of the next meeting, which will be
held at the Weslaco Museum at 9:30
a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19.
The December meeting will be
Dec. 10 in Hidalgo.
The highlight meeting will be
March 18. That’s when buses will
take participants from the Refugio
County Museum to the O’Connor
chapel, where a tour of St. Dennis
will take place. A trip to the Peter
Fagan Home is also planned with a
luncheon, followed by an excursion
to the Aransas Wildlife Refuge.
In January, the Texas Tropical
Trail will celebrate its 100th meet-
ing.
Wales said participants will meet
in Three Rivers at City Hall on the
third Tuesday of the month, where
some re-enactors will put on a show.
Participants will board a bus to
see the Mission Sin Caja, an authen-
tic Spanish mission fashioned after
Mission Conception in San Antonio.
The group will then take a trip to the
Lonesome Dove Ranch, a replica of
the town with more re-enactors put-
ting on a show.
The 2014 Texas Historical
Commission calendar is now avail-
able at the Refugio County Museum.
Calendars, full of historical photos,
are $8 each.

Editor:
I would personally like
to thank everyone who
went through the haunt-

was wonderful.
Dawn, Daniel, Christi,
Jaiden and Crystal I can’t
thank you enough for tak-
ing time out of your lives
to be there every night.
Jo, Sway, and Denise
your help in putting the
house all together was no
less then amazing.
The rest of the scary
crew I would like to thank
because without ya’ll we
wouldn’t have been able
to pull it off. We did awe-
some guys.
I would also like to
thank the owner of the
house; without his gen-
erosity we wouldn’t have
had a place to hold it.
Manny, Sandee and
Arnold the items bor-
rowed really added to the
decor. Last but not least
thanks to my husband

S.N.O.W.
celebrating 21st
Christmas
Editor:
S.N.O.W. of Refugio
County is celebrating its
21st Christmas season.
With the assistance of
local individuals, groups
and businesses, S.N.O.W.
has provided gifts and
food baskets to an aver-
age of 80 children and 45
families each year.
They have a merrier
Christmas because of the
generosity evidenced by
this community every
year.
The annual S.N.O.W.
flake tree is once again
located at the Dennis
O’Connor Public Library.
I encourage readers to
visit the library, find a
great book to read and
adopt a S.N.O.W. flake
during their time there.
Each S.N.O.W. flake
contains information
about a local child: age,
gender, clothes sizes and
a wished for gift. These
children will have bright-
er smiles because of these
gifts.
If you don’t have time
to shop, feel free to go
by, donate funds and the
“elves” will take care of
the rest. In addition, each
family with children on
the tree also will receive
a food basket.
BIG OLE COUNTRY BREAKFAST
Cooked to order ■6 am-1050 am
Biscuits, Eggs, French Toast, Omelets, waffles,
Pancakes, Ham, Pork Chops, Steak, Bacon, Sausage,
Sweet Morning Breakfast an
Don’t foroet I
These baskets contain
everything they’ll need
to prepare a delicious
Christmas dinner ... one
that many would have to
forego if not for your gen-
erosity.
Should you need more
information about how to
adopt a S.N.O.W. flake,
feel free to speak with the
awesome library staff or
contact Pat Blackwell at
361-220-0409. They’ll be
glad to tell you anything
you need to know.
Our Dec. 1, deadline
is rapidly approaching,
so I’m asking that you
act soon. This will allow
S.N.O.W. volunteers to
organize donations, pur-
chase gifts for those chil-
dren not adopted, shop
for food basket items and
coordinate distribution in
a timely manner.
Again, it is only
through your generosity
that our efforts are even
possible. If you’ve donat-
ed in the past or already
adopted a S.N.O.W. flake
this year, thank you. You
embody the true spirit of
Christmas.
If you’re thinking
about donating, please
do. Every dollar donated
will be spent on local chil-
dren and their families.
Assist your less fortunate
neighbors in celebrating
the holiest day of the year
with gifts under the tree
and a hot meal on their
table. Merry Christmas!
