Student Speak Question & Answer with Dr. Lanny Hall
Page 2
by EMILY HILL
YJ STAFFWRITER
Howard Payne University
President Dr. Lanny Hall
answered several questions
and concerns from students
Monday during Student
Speak, a Student Government
Association-sponsored event.
Students submitted questions
to SGA to be addressed by the
president at the inlormative
event.
SGA promiotes the com-
munication between the stu-
.dents and the HPU faculty and
administration. The organiza-
tion arranges Student Speak
as an opportunity for stu-
dents to have their questions
answered.
Student questions ranged
from alcohol to dances to
blocked television networks.
Question: What is one of'
your main goals for HPU's
growth in the next 3-5 years?
Dr. Hall: "Due to demo-
graphics and the current state
of the economy, our new goal
is to have 1,200 full-time stu-
dents instead of the proposed
1,500 full-time students. Right

parking lot, and four in the
Mabee Center parking lot.
Other campus improvements
in HPU's future include the
Doakie Day Art Center, a new
communications building to
replace the current facilities, a
new education building behind
the Mabee Cent ,r, the Faith
and Life Leadership Center
addition to Phelps Bible
Building, Phelps Chapel reno-
vation, a welcome center addi-
tion to Packer Administration
Building, and possibly student
center renovations and a pool.
The art center is sched-
nlvd' to' be completed by lateK4

Faculty, staff, and students gather at Student Speak.now, we have about 1,000 full-
time students."
Question: Does HPU's tax-
exempt status affect its ability
to use religion as a factor in
hiring and firing individuals?
Dr. Hall: "Yes, because of
HPU's IRS status of religion.
We can legally discriminate
based on religion, and I hope
Congress never changes it.
Since HPU is a non-profit
institution, we are tax-exempt.
HPU is exempt to certain
items such as food, but busi-
ness between unrelated educa-
summer of 2009. The baseball
field has undergone improve-
ments and construction of a
new softball field is in the
future. The university would
like to have a basketball arena
due to the difficulty of sched-
uling around the city's sched-
ule in Brownwood Coliseum,
but currently the money is not
available.

how to get involved by voicing
your opinion or to learn more
about changes on campus, visit

from SGA President Tristan

Question: Are we consid-
ering any graduate programs
other than youth ministry?
Dr Hall: "Yes, we are. The
next will be a graduate pro-
gram for administration. In the
future we hope to have a busi-
ness graduate program."
Question: Will sports be
added to HPU's NCAA partic-
ipation such as track or cross
country?
Dr. Hall: "Right now we
have 10 sports. We are required
to have a total of 12, so wewill add two more soon. There
is always a possibility that
track or cross country may be
added."
Question: Why aren't the
television networks BET and
MTV available on campus?
Dr. Hall: "We always look
at the beliefs and the con-
tent fit of the campus and
the networks on cable. We
block those channels as well
as Comedy Central because
the language and other content
are not appropriate. The list
just gets longer."
Question: Will the admin-
istration revise the school's
alcohol policy in the future?
Dr. Hall: "Whether on cam-
pus or off, HPU policy states
there is no drinking allowed.
There will be no dramatic
change with the policy in the
future. The no-alcohol policy
shows that it's who we are."
Question: On-campus danc-
es: will they ever be a pos-
sibility?
Dr. Hall: "The policy bans
on-campus dances. I remem-
ber when I was younger,
dancing was frowned upon by
Baptists and several still feel
strongly about this issue. It'stime to relook at the policy,
although trends show that very
little dancing goes on among
schools which lift the ban on
dancing."
Question: Has HPU ever
explored the feasibility of
making Jacket Bucks usable
at businesses in Brownwood?
Dr. Hall: "HPU has looked
into this before. Some busi-
nesses can do this while others
can't due to technology with
systems. Is it fair to busi-
nesses if HPU adopts this idea,
knowing that some businesses
can't? Usually larger institu-
tions have agreements with
businesses already, which
make it easier for them. It will
be explored."
Vice President for Business
Affairs and Finance Brenda
Pena: "Actually there will be
a meeting next week with the
regional manager of Sodexo
about this possibility."
