Variety of Speakers Slated for DIA
The American heritage and in-
ternational scene will be presented
during Democracy-in-Action Week
by speakers from a variety of in-
terests and backgrounds-politics,
education, history, government, in-
ternational affairs, religion and
news analysis.
The speakers-seven men and
one woman-in order of their ap-
pearances for the week include:
State Representative Ben Barnes
of DeLeon, now serving his second
term as state representative, is
chairman of the House Rules Com-
mittee, vice chairman of the Banks
and Banking Committee and a
member of the committees on Agri-
culture, Oil and Gas, and Revenue
and Taxation.
Paul Harvey, dynamic young
ABS news analyst, author of three
books and a three-times-a-week
newspaper column, was voted top
commentator of the year in Janu-
ary, 1962, in a New York Radio-
Television Daily poll of more than
600 of the nation's critics. Twenty-
eight of his broadcasts have been
read into the Congressional Record.
Bill Moyers, deputy director o-
the Peace Corps, at 28 is the young-
est person to receive a Presidential
appointment with Senate confirm-
ation in recent history. A native
Texan, he was executive assistant
to Vice President Lyndon B. John-
son during the 1960 campaign.
Princess Catherine Caradja of
Romania, escaped from behind the
Iron Curtain in 1952 after several
previous attempts, and after herestates and the foster homes she
operated for orphans were confis-
cated. She had been forced from
her home during the German oc-
cupation of World War I and aided
more than 100 American fliers in
a POW camp during World War II.
Dr. Robert Morris of Dallas is
president and counsel of 'the De-
fenders of American Liberties and
a former president of the University
of Dallas. He has served as ad-
visor and counsel for several U. S.
Senate committees and subcom-
mittees.
Dr. Herschel Hobbs, pastor of the
First Baptist Church of Oklahoma
City, is president of the Southern
Baptist Convention. He has written
12 books since 1951 and is per-
manent pastor for the Baptist Hour
radio program, carried by 484 sta-
tions, including short wave broad-
casts to the most remote regions of
the earth.
Dr. William D. McCain, presi-
dent of the University of Southern
Mississippi, is a noted historian and
teacher, who has served as his-
torian at Morristown National His-
torical Park in New Jersey, assist-
ant archivist at the National Arch-
ives in Washington, D.C., and di-
rector of the Mississippi State De-
partment of Archives and History.
U. S. Senator John Tower, mak-
ing his second appearance on a
Howard Payne DIA program, is the
first Republican to be elected to the
Senate from Texas since Reconstruc-
tion and the only Republican Sena-
tor ever elected by popular votefrom any of the former Confederate
States. He serves on the Senate
Committees on Banking and Cur-
rency and Labor and Public Wel-
fare, in addition to serving on the
Senate Republican Campaign Com-
mittee.Program
