Tyler MaloneSGA committee to make resolution
for freshmen curfew policy changeby MARISA BERNENS
YJ STAFF WRITER
Curfew may be a pol-
icy that is forgotten by
upper classmen after their
first year in school, but for
the freshmen at Howard
Payne, the policy is very
real and rarely forgotten.
Not to mention generally
disliked.
To solve the issue of
the dissatisfaction with
the current curfew policy
by the majority of fresh-
men students, the Student
Government Association
(SGA) has appointed
a committee to make a
resolution to change the
policy. Curry Mitchell, a
freshman who is Presiding
Senator for the freshman
class in SGA, heads the
committee.
"Robert Davis and I sat
down and discussed dif-
ferent things that we could
change for the student
body. We thought that cur-
few was something and
that I should bring it up
with the other freshmen,"
Mitchell said.
The committee that
Mitchell and SGA put
together includes fresh-
men Whitney Sirois,
Stephanie Williams, and
Callie Elli; sophomores
Adam Hardy and Ciera
Culpepper; and junior
Christina Todo.To get a general con-
sensus not just from the
freshmen, but from other
members of the student
body, Mitchell consulted
the resident directors of
the dorms.
"When we talking with
the RD's and RA's, we
found out that they don't
like it either," Mitchell
said.
Mitchell explained the
resolution the commit-
tee is writing is still in
progress, but they have an
idea of what they want to
present.
"We talked about just
lessening the policy, like
taking away weekend
curfew or making it an
hour later, but then we
just decided to try to get
rid of it completely. It's
a hard policy to enforce,"
Mitchell said.
The plan that Mitchell
and the rest of the Curfew
Policy Change committee
are putting together is fast
approaching its comple-
tion. Last Thursday, Nov.
12, the committee met to
begin writing a resolu-
tion and hopes to present
the resolution to SGA on
Monday, Nov. 23, right
before the Thanksgiving
holiday.
"If the resolution pass-
es through SGA, then
we can present it to the
Board of Trustees, hope-
fully the Monday afterMARISA BERNENS/YJ Staff
Freshman Curry Mitchell enters Jennings Hall with his fob.Thanksgiving," Mitchell
said.
Mitchell said if the
Board of Trustees does
not approve their plan or
is not sure about it, the
committee hopes to do
a test-run like with the
visitation policy change."Maybe since it's close
to the end of the semester,
we can try the change of
the curfew until Christmas
and get a report of how it
went after Christmas and
