The Commissioners Court
met Thursday afternoon,
January 25. to hold a public
hearing on pay raises and open
bids
A 51 _■ percent pay raise for
all elected county officials,
except the Commissioners and
County Judge, was approved
In addition, the Commissioners
decided that they would not use
county cars or courtesy cars
for the remainder of the year
Instead they will take a
straight $20(1 per month travel
allowance in an effort to reduce
county expenditures
The Court also appt oved a
resolution to be sent to the Corp
of Engineers, Cong. John
Young. Sen. Lloyd Benson and
Sen John Tower, urging action
on the Chiltipin Creek Project
The resolution pointed out that
Sinton has been the victim of
severe flooding in (he past, that
the county has been working to
alleviate the problem by

Attends Seminar
County Attorney Richard
Hatch and four other Texas
prosecutors were among 60
prosecuting attorneys from
around the country who last
week attended a three-day
seminar at Reno. Nev , on
juvenile justice, domestic
relations and family law.
The seminar was sponsored
by the National College of
District Attorneys of Houston
and the National College of
Juvenile Justice which has its
headquarters a! fieno.
The seminar began with a
session on the nation’s juvenile
court system. Discussions
included nature and variety of
proceedings, role of the social
agencies iri juvenile court and
the future of the nation’s
juvenile justice system.
Prosecutors also discussed
special legal problems of
juveniles including the bat-
tered child syndrome, abor-
tions for juveniles, sex offenses
against juveniles, the juvenile
as a witness and the payment
of child support.
Hatch's expenses were paid
by the Texas District and
County Attorneys Association
constructing drainage ditches
that empty into the creek and
that action by the Corp is
needed to prevent more severe
flooding in the future The Corp
has had the project under study
for many years
The court also approved the
1973 Amended Budget and 1973
Revenue Sharing Budget. Half
of the revenue sharing funds
will gc into the county general
fund with the remaining half
divided equally among the four
precincts.
In other action, the court
approved the employment of
the first County Librarian.
Mrs Bernice Abrego of
Columbus. Missouri, was hired
at a salary of $10,000 per year
to supervise and help libraries
located in the county. Mrs
Abrego. who will assume her
duties February 12. will travel
between the seven libraries in
the county to help them
upgrade their services. Her
office will be in the court house

McCown, representing the City
of San Patricio, appeared
before the court to ask for aid
in combatting rural fires
