time — for personal survey, reflection
and self betterment.
Thus, we believe it is proper and
pertinent for a regional inventory

The ocasion of the annual New
Year’s greetings to the Jewish
people of the Southwest affords
me opportunity this year tt> pay
tribute to one whose loss has
brought a sense of sorrow to the
people of the state he loved and
served so unselfishly.
I refer, of course, to the be-
loved Dr. Henry Cohen of Gal-
veston.
It is impossible even to sum-
marize in so short a space the
achievements of Rabbi Cohen’s
long and fruitful life. Religious
leaders, humanitarian, social re-
former in tlie best sense of the
term, tireless worker in all causes
for the betterment of his city,
his state and of his fellow man-
kind. The star of Texas wijl al-
ways shine brighter because des-
tiny guided his footsteps to our
shores when he Mas a young man.
Henry Cohen will be revered
and remembered as a great Texan,
a great American, a great citizen
of the world. Our life and times
are richer in humanity, in kindli-
ness and in brotherly love for his
having lived among us.
ALLAN SHIVERS,
Oov^nw of Texas. ■
