NAZI IMPUDENCE
The sentence was so light that it was tantamount
-to forgiveness alongside the gravity of the crime.
But to Franz Rademacher, one-time secretary to
Hitler and Nazi Foreign Office official, the prospect of
serving a three-year prison term for the crime of having
•a hand in the slaying of 1,500 Jews is so unsavory that he
decided to appeal to the mercy of higher German justice.
Rademacher was convicted some weeks ago by a Ger-
man court in Nuremberg. During the trial he purjured
himself, for which he was later castigated by the court.
Before sentence was pronounced he threw himself on the
mercy of the court, declaring there were extenuating cir-
cumstances to be considered — he had been merely danc-
ing to Nazi music and was obeying higher orders to kill.
No one has been able to establish what standards of
justice the court applied when it imposed on the admitted
killer so light a sentence as three years. To Rademacher
however the punishment is seemingly out of proportion
to the crime, and he has now applied to a higher court
for a review and leniency.
In the light of the merciful trend of German courts
toward war criminals, we would hesitate to make a sub-
stantial wager against Rademacher.
A HEARTENING PRECEDENT
The news that Mount Sinai Hospital of Miami Beach,
Florida, had appointed a Negro physician to its medical
staff will be greeted throughout the liberal world not
only as a milestone in the medical history of the South
but as the harbinger of a trend that will bring brothers
together as equals on all thresholds.
We are particularly glad to record that it was a
Jewish hospital that took the step to becoming what is
believed to be the first Southern white institution of its
kind to appoint a Negro to its staff. The action was a
demonstration of vision and courage as well as an expres-
sion of a great democratic principle. This unprecedented
step may well become a heartening precedent in breaking
down prejudices whose prevalence in a civilized world is
as tragic as it is immoral.

Reduction Noted
The reduction was due to a small
number of substantial decreases in
gifts among 22 of the larger contri-

been a substantial increase in giving
among those in the middle and small-
er gifts groups. A few of the large
contributors have likewise increased
their gifts over 1951.

Barkley In Dallas

The event will be a dinner at 7
p.m. at the Adolphus Hotel.
The April 30th dinner will be the
outstanding event in Dallas Jewish
communal life this season. It will
serve the purpose of commemoration
Israel’s fourth birthday.
It is fitting,” Mr. Corenbleth said
in announcing the celebration, “that
Vice-President Barkley should parti-
cipate in this historic meeting. All
of us know of his devotion to the
cause of democracy, and his contin-
uing support of the State of Israel
during the four years since its estab-
lishment. Mr. Barkley’s support of

“I anticipate that tire Israel Fourth
Anniversary Celebration on April 30th
will be one of the most thrilling
events in the history of Dallas,” Mr.
Corenbleth stated. “We expect an

Vice-President and to honor Israel
on its fourth birthday.”
The State of Israel Bond drive is
the primary source of funds for Is-
rael’s historic program of industrial
and agricultural development. Mon-
eys derived from these bonds must
make possible the construction of new
factories, the mechanization of farm-
ing, and the building of new roads,
power lines and harbor facilities.

HERUT PLANS WIDE
DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST
REPARATIONS TALKS
TEL AVIV (WNS) A plan to hold
nation-wide demonstrations against
Israeli reparations talks with Germany,
was announced by the right-wing
Herat Party.
Party leaders said they would apply
for permission to hold the demon-
strations, but that they would go
ahead with their plan even if their
license application is denied.
With Mapai Party members threat-
ening to hold a counter demonstra-
tion, the police was reported plan-
ning precautionary measures against
possible clashes.

Wg claim a unique pride in intellectualism. It is
difficult to see that intellectualism can also be material-
istic and idolatrous. We know it can be so if the intel-
lectualism has in mind only the development of scientific
means of destroying other nations. W e know it can be
so if the result is to make us proud and vainglorious and
therefore cruel.
Several hundred years ago the learned class within
Judaism became so oppressive that the unlearned masses
could not live under them. Then we had the revolt of
Chasidism, humble piety against the false assumptions of
the learned.
If Judaism is a religion then it teaches the worth
of the individual merely because he is a human being,
merely because he is God’s creature. If Judaism is a
religion it holds fear or reverence or love of God to be
the highest virtue, and love and regard for and help of
the fellowman as the simplest evidence thereof.
In the guise of idealism and intellectualism we find
excuses to deny our religious values. The respect we
pay to grades and promotion and achievement in school
is an example. The same people who keep their children
in school on Jewish Holidays rarely read a book nor do
those children. They think it is education that keeps
them in school. Actually it is grades. And grades are
merely a form of material achievement highly refined.
It is a hard nut to crack because even their Hebrew
teachers are victims, and often the most pronounced ones,
of the cult of grades. Grades sound like learning and
Jews have a high respect for learning. Actually they
may have only a high respect for the schools and the
teachers, the non-Jewish schools and teachers, that is.
They do not have such respect for their Hebrew schools
and Hebrew teachers. Even the Hebrew schools and He-
brew teachers themselves do not.
It is an example of depreciation of self and extol-
ment of the non-Jewish or of officialdom. If it were
learning we valued we would find time for Jewish learn-
ing. Ask the school teachers. They will tell you which
are more important, grades or character, your school or
your religion.
