Ruby Josephine Bengtson
Sorensen died Friday, March 20,
1992 in Austin.
Ruby was born March 2,1907 in
Elgin.
. Ruby was a member of the
Gethsemane Lutheran Church in
Austin and a retiree on the Austin
National Bank, now Nations
Bank.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Walter B. Sorensen;
brothers, Harry L. Bengston Sr.
and Gilbert 0. Bengston.
She is survived by sisters, Ada
Carlson of Round Rock and
Pauline Becker of Austin;
numerous cousins, nieces,
nephews, including. Harry L.
Bengtson, Jr. and Howard T.
Bengtson of Austin.
Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. on Monday, March 23 at
Gethsemane Lutheran Church
followed by Burial at Austin
Memorial Park with Pastor Karl
Gronberg officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family re-
quests that memorial gifts be
* made to Gethsemane Lutheran
Church, Austin.

Bedell, 66-
Cornelius Bedell Jr., age 66, a
lifetime resident of Austin, and
member of St. Mary’s Cathedral,
died Sunday, March 22,1992.
Mr. Bedell is survived by his
wife, Augustina Bedell; sons, Ben
Bedell, Gilbert Bedell, Danny
Bedell, Chris Bedell, Paul Bedell;
daughters, Mary Gonzales, Tbnie
Bedell, all of Austin, and
daughter, Rosie Martinez of
McGregor; brothers. Jancinto
Garcia of Bastrop County and
Henry Bedell of Austin; sister,
Mary Cloyd of Dallas; 18 grand-
children and four
great-grandchildren.
Rosary was said at 7 p.m. Tues-
day, March 24 at Cook-Walden
Funeral Home, Lamar Location.
Mass was celebrated^! 16a.m.,
Wednesday, March 25 at St.
Mary’s Cathedral with Mon-
signor Edward Matocha of-
ficiating. Interment will be in
Capital Memorial Hill.
Santos R. Cantu, 91, of Bastrop
died Thursday, March 19 in
Austin.
Cantu was born August 22,1900
in Bastrop County to Perfecto and
Rios Rodriguez.
She served as a missionary in
Bastrop after studying Bible and
music at Instituto Biblicalo in
Bastrop.
She is survived by two sons, Eli
Cantu of San Antonio and Ezra
Cantu of Houston; two daughters,
Bertha Lines of Merietta,
Georgia and Obie Buitron of,
Austin; a sister, Luisa Garcia of
Bastrop; nine grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at
2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at
First Mexican Baptist Church in
Bastrop. Interment followed in
Alto Vist^-Cemetery.
Howard B. Newman, 76
Elderly enjoy party

Howard B. Newman, formerly
of Bastrop, of Round Rock died
Saturday, March 21,1992 at Har-
thstone Nursing Center in Round
Rock.
He was born on December 15,
1915 in Thylor to Asa Lee Newman
and Canzada Bryan.
He was united in marriage on’
December 1, 1935 to Minnie
Schroeder.
He was a member of Thrall
Baptist Church. His occupation
was a farmer and he was klso a
Mobil Oil Cosignee for 11 years.
Survivors include his wife, Min-
nie Newman of Round Rock;
daughter, Deloise Kellick of
Samuel A. Vance, 65
Wyoming; son, Donald Newman
of Thorndale; sisters, Hazel
Schroeder of Round Rock and
Ruth Thy lor of Hutto; brothers,
WJ. Newman of Richland Hills
and Abner Newman of Thorn-
dale; three grandchildren,
Michelle Wiggins, Steven Kellick,
and Jeffery Kellick and six
great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday,
March 23 at 2 p.m. at Hutto Bap-
tist Church with Reverend Jack
Harris officiating. Burial follow-
ed in Taylor City Cemetery.

Samuel A. Vance, age 65, of San
Antonio, formerly of Marble Falls
and Killeen, died Friday, March
20,1992.
He is survived by his wife,
Marie Louise Vance; sons,
Michael Vance of Killeen and
Patrick Vance of Bastrop;
daughter, Suzette Vance of
Portland, Oregon; brother, John
Vance of Fresno, California;
sister, Jacqueline Vance Schoen-
ing of Honolulu, Hawaii; and
three grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday,
March 24 at 1:45 p.m. at Fort Sam
Houston National Cemetery in
San Antonio with Full Military
Honors, with Chaplain John
DavCrheim offciating.
Jordan LeRoy Davis, 51
Jordan LeRoy David, 51, of
Bastrop died Thursday, March 19,
1992.
He was bom on March 26,1940
in Loveland Colorado. Most of his
life was spent as a tool pusher in
the oil fields.
Private services are planned at
a later date.
O’Connell
joins race
District 2 (Bastrop, Caldwell,
Fayette and Lee Counties) has
three candidates enrolled in the
race for Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature. Aspirants for the
post are Buzz O’Connell from
Bastrop County and Alfred E.
Sanders and Bea Tschatschula
from Lee County.
One candidate will be elected
per district.
All persons who are registered
Texas voters 60 years of age or
older are encouraged to vote.
Elections will be held on Tuseday,
%May 26 from 9am to 2pm at the
following polling sites:

Ladies of
Charity name
new officers
On March 12,1992, a new year
began for the Bastrop Ladies of
Charity as officers were elected
to serve for the coming year.
The 39 members in attendance
at the monthly meeting elected
Evelyn Weilert, president; Wan-
da Arias, vice president; Geheva
Klaus, secreatary; and Rosell&>
Roeber, treasurer.
On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17,
residents from Bastrop Nursing
Center and Autumn Hills joined
Father Edward Dukupil and 21
members of the Bastrop Ladies of
Charity’ for an annual party
honoring these senior citizens.
Other guests included children
out of school on Spring Break and
several other local volunteers.
Green and white decorations
included shamrocks, balloons, a
rainbow and leprechaun. Irish
music completed the mood honor-
ing the Saint of the Emerald Isle.
About 90 people gathered for the
celebration at the Ascension
Parish Center.
As the guests arrived, each was
presented with a green lei by
youngsters, and each received a
shamrock name tag. After a
period of fellowship and socializa-
tion, everyone enjoyed a lunch of
fried chicken, biscuits,
vegetables, salads and desserts
by Ladies of Charity,
Following lunch, bingo for the
guests was called by Arturo Dal-
ly and prizes ranged from stuff-
ed animals, wind chimes to food
items. Before returning to the
nursing homes in the early after-,
noon, each guest was given a
small bag of cookies, candy,
mints and a green balloon.
In addition to this annual event
sponsored by the organization,
volunteers also work at both
homes throughout the year.
Religious services are on Fri-
day’s. Bingo, popcorn, and other
activities take place on other
weekdays.
Working with the elderly
residents was one of the firs t pro-
jects taken on when the Ladies of
Charity was organized in this
community.
