Blaschke begins VISTA job
THE BASTROP ADVERTISER
Section 1, Page 3
Andy Blaschke of McDade, a
retired state highway department
employee, started a new job in
January. This time he’s a VISTA
volunteer coordinating a pilot
project for the Texas Department
of Health Public Health Region I.
The VISTA Transportation pro-
ject targets Bastrop County
residents who need rides to and
from the Public Health Clinic in
Bastrop.
VISTA or Volunteers In Service
Tb America is a national program
launched in 1964 as the domestic
twin of the Peace Corps abroad.
VISTA provides full-time
volunteers to organizations that
are striving to eliminate and
alleviate poverty and poverty-
related problems in selected
communities.
Blaschke said his job is to
recruit volunteer drivers and
match them with area residents
who need transportation to clinic
appointments in Bastrop.
The health department is spon- *
soring the program because
transportation is a problem for
many rural residents, according
to agency officials.
The project seeks to fill gaps in
related area services such as the
Capital Area Rural Transporta-
tion System (CARTS), said
Blaschke.
He hopes to locate'volunteers
who can drive patients to clinic
appointments, assist in the office,
promote the project through a
speaker’s bureau and help coor-
dinate efforts as a member of an
advisory board.
Prospective volunteers can
reach Blaschke at 512-321-3982 or
stop by the health clinic in the
former Bastrop Hospital at 104
Loop 150 West, Suite 102.
