The Youth Essay Program is
a National Essay Competition
sponsored by the Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United
States and its Ladies Auxiliary
to give their views on democ-
racy while improving their
writing skills and competing
for worthwhile awards and
prizes.
The Program theme is
“HOW SHOULD WE
HONOR AMERICA’S VET-
ERANS?” All entries should
be typewritten and cannot be
less than 300 words or over
400 words. Every word is
counted, regardless of length.
A one-letter word (a) will be
counted and given the same
value (one word) as a 12-letter
word (enthusiastic). Partici-
pants must not identify them-
selves, their school, city or
state in the essay. Essay must
be the contestant’s original
work and a product of the
contestant’s own thinking. The
approach to the theme should
be positive and focus on the
theme. Quotations may be used
sparingly, if plainly identified
wherever used. The judging
criteria will be 20 points for
addressing the theme, 50 points
for theme development and 30
points for the clarity of ideas.
The first place National win-
ner will receive a $10,000
United States Savings Bond
and a trip to the V.F.W Na-
tional Convention. Additional
U.S. Savings Bonds and/or
other prizes may be awarded at
each level of the competition.
The Department of Texas,
Veterans of Foreign Wars and
its Ladies Auxiliary will
present the first place .winner
with a $1,000 Savings Bond
and be invited to the State Con-
vention. Second place will re-
ceive a $500 Savings Bond,
third and fourth places will re-
ceive a $200 Savings Bond,
and fifth through tenth will re-
ceive a $100 Savings Bond.
District winner will receive a
$200 Savings Bond, and Post
winner will receive a $100
Savings Bond.
The local V.F.W. Post 1839
and its Ladies Auxiliary are
asking all eligible students to
participate. Please contact your
teachers or the local chairman,

1361 for further information.
The deadline for the competi-
tion is December 15, 1999.

AND THE ANSWER TO "who, what & why"(from Page 1) is - Heather Haltom, Teacher of
the Gifted & Talented Classes at Eastside Intermediate School, exhibits her own gifts and talents
in her classroom. She painted one wall with a sky effect, achieved by dipping plastic bags in
paint and rubbing them across the surface. The flowers and bugs populating her landscape were
done with the help of Haltom's creative mother. Another dull cinder block wall was painted in a
solid barn-red. Haltom models one of the creative ways she relates to her class-she created
"mood hats" out of various materials, including colored bands of cloth, to help her students ex-
