A new mayor for Ec rleson
Roper maintains two-to-one margin in runoff
RICK ROPER
A month made virtually no dif-
ference in the mood ol Burleson voters
when it came to the mayor's race.
The verdict was an almost two-
to-one margin for challenger Rick
Roper the first lime he went head-to-
head with incumbent Vera Calvin on
May 2.
Four weeks to the day later, on
Saturday, May 30, Roper collected
just over twice as many votes as
Burleson voters selected him the city's
new mayor.
Roper, a former city council-
man, received 571 votes in the may-
oral runoff to 257 for Calvin.
On May 2, Roper had an even
700 votes in a four-candidate race
while Calvin earned a spot in the
runoff with 365 votes.
A switch of only eight votes
would have given the election to
Roper without a runoff.
Calvin may have suffered from
association with fourcandidatcs who
I were recalled on May 2 despite the
j fact that she was not a part of that
.coalition that ousted former city
manager Jack Eadcs. She originally
fell heir to the city's top executive
post when she served as mayor pro
remind moved up to the number one
spot when then mayor Jerry Boone
resigned.
She was seeking her second full
term in that position this year.
The early vote tabulation of 232
ballots was almost as many votes as
runoff elections generally generate.
The tout! vote of 828 was termed
_ excellent by City Secretary/Acting
Co-City Manager Jean Phillips. ’
Roper won among those voting
early by a vote of 155 to 177,
He led on electron day by an
even larger margin of 416 votes to
180.

Penny Race
quickly adds
up to dollars
AH those pennies thatsomc might
carelessly toss aside as being of no
real value, do add up. Burleson stu-
dents learned that recently when they
participated in the Race for Pennies
1992.
Thanks to the contributions of
many, many pennies—404,519 to be
exact—the needy of Burleson will
have some of their needs met through
the annual "race" in which schools
compete with one another to bag up
the most pennies and take them to
First National Bank in Burleson where
the pennies arc counted.
When all the counting was done,
the total was $4,045.19. The top five
schools were the Taylor Texans,
$771.12 (about 630 students); Burle-
son Junior High School, $737.35
(about 531 students); Nola Dunn
Longhorns, $628.58 (about 571 stu-
dents); Frazier Bears, $548.32 (about
509 students); and Burleson High
School, $478.16 (11 classes partici-
pated). The olhcrcontributors include
the Mound Mustangs, $430.28; Nor-
wood Vikings, $283.06; Happy Hours
" Kindergarten, $100.24; and First

Representatives from almost all of the schools who participated in the
Harvest House Race for Pennies 1992 gather around the bags full of
pennies—404,519 to be exact ($4.045.19)—that were donated to the
Harvest House. First National Bank of Burleson did the counting. Gary
Shipp (r), senior vice president/cashier presented a check for that
amount to Pauline Lankford, director of the Harvest House. Other bank
employees who assisted in or oversaw the tedious counting included (1-r)
Paul Wethington, senior vice president; Bobby Evartt, computer opera-
tor; and Pam Cox, drive-in teller.

Please, Let Me Out!
Dwight Lilly of Mitchells looks on as one of the poor jailbirds pleads to
be released in this Burleson Star file photo of 1991's Crime Stopper jail-
a-thon in Burleson last June. Asof Friday, 45 people were include ’ on the
Most Wanted list for the June 5 jail-a-thon. Mdre are expect . to be
arrested, tlyrnl^ to |heir friends or enemies, for just*$20. The jail a-thon
has expanded this year with a jail site in Cleburne on the courthouse lawn
and one in Burleson at Elk Plaza. The jail-a-thon'will be from 9 a.m.-4,
p.m. on Friday, June 5. See page 3 for pictures of some of the Most
Wanted. '
BY SALLY ELLERTSON
When Burleson and Cleburne
Crime Stoppers decided to combine
forces and take on the whole county,
they increased everybody's chances
of being arrested. That includes the
non-criminals. The Most Wanted list
is already 45 names long with each
person having to cough up S200 to
bond out.
Not fair you say? Well, it’s not
like you're going to be fingerprinted
and thrown in the hoosegow for days,.
At the most, those not on the Most
Wanted list will have to spend seven
hours there if nobody bails them out.
That's haw long the 1992 Crime
Stopper jail-a-thon will be operat-
ing—9 a.m.-4 p.m.— Friday, June 5.
This year's jail-a-lhon is a little
different since it is going outside the
city limits of Burleson. There will be
two jaiLsitcs—the traditional one at
Elk.Plaza in Burleson and the new
one on the lawn of the Johnson County
Courthouse in Cleburne. The north-
ern end of the county (Burleson,
Josh ua, Li 11 ian, A1 varado, Vcnus)will
go to the Burleson jail while the
southcrncndofthccounty (Cleburne,
Godlcy, Keene, Grandview, Rio V is-
ta) will go to the Cleburne jail.
It costs S20 to have your friend
or enemy arrested, handcuffed, and
driven to jail (see the accompanying
arrest form). That person then has to
pay to get out of jail. Depending on
how hc/shc treats the judge and how
heinous the mock charges that have
been drawn up arc, the bail amount
could be as much or more than $20. If
they get out of the office or house
without any money, somebody better
show up to bail him/her out unless
