Since the annual balloon
launch began, Weekly
Reader has furnished
nearly 4 million free bal-
loons to schools partici-
pating in th# Weekly
Header Writing Pals pro-
gram, a pen pal program
in which weekly Reader
pairs classes across the
country. According to
Principe' Goolsby, the
balloon launch will be the
climax of Timpson'S
yearlong participation in
Weekly Reader Writing
Pals. The goal of the
program is to motivate
children to write to and
to become familiar with
students in other parts of
the country.
"Timpson pupils wilt writ*
to every person who sends
beck a message card
from our balloons," de-
clares Goolsby.

Timpson Volunteer Fire-
man mat Wednesday ev-
ening, March 3rd, for a
special called meeting.
Twenty-three were In
attendance at the meet-
ing. Members present
were: Bill Hailey, Tim
Magness, Bubba Lee,
Kenneth Hanson, Clay
Taylor, Bobby Daw, Cur-
tis Wilson, Floyd Cuzlck,
Don Tomlinson, Paul
Mullins, John Tutt, Oray
Ford, David Halley, Ger-
ald Hughas, Lonnia Cur-
tis, Billy Peveto, Tracy
Broadway, Alex Taylor,
Sam Hooper, Ken Ram-
sey, Roy Castleberry,
Bobby Yarbrough, and
Willie Rame.
The meeting was reques-
ted to elect officers for
the coming year. All the
incumbent officers were
re-elected by th8 de-
partment. They are as
follows: Fire Chief BUI
Hailey; Assistant Fire
Chief Clay Taylor; Sec-
retary/Treasurer Tim
Magness and Ra orter
Tracy Broadway.
Chief Hailey appointed
Kenneth Hanson ana Ozay
Ford for another year as
Department Captains.
In other items, th* De-
partment voted to re-
instate Biily Peveto as a
member. Billy had left
the Department because
of person business rea-
sons.
The Fire Department has
also voted on two new
Junior Firemen: Alex
Taylor and Bobby Yar-
brough.
At last month's regular
meeting on February 25,
firemen elected two new
members, Paul Mullins
and Willie Rame.
Chief Hailey discussed the
issue of the Department
obtaining five folding ta-
bles from a church In
Nacogdoches. The matter
went into motion, was
voted on and passed to
purchase the tables to be
used at fish frys, Frontier
Day*, and other projects.
Department member Bob-
by Daw, who is employed
by Southwestern Bell Tel-
ephone, Informed firemen
that Ball Telephone would
donate a used van to the
Fire Department as t
community service to be
used strictly as a rescue
vehicle. Dew said hs
would do more shacking
in to the project.
Firemen were reminded
that th# Tetum Fire De-
partment Training School
would be held next week
and intarest was shown
by several firemen to at-
tend.
Firemen adjourned to an
extensive fire drill which
was held at the school
baseball field.
The Fire Department re-
ceived a donation from
J&D Construction of
Bronson.
A memorial In the name
Of Mrs. A.F. Burns and
Soi Moore from Mr. and
Mrs. Brown Booth, and a
memorial In the name of
Jeffery Morns from Ray
and Cfeone Johnson, were
both placed In the Jews
of Life Fund.
The Fire Department has
responded to two fire
calls this last weak.
On Friday, March 6th,
firemen responaed to a
grass fire at J&J Truck
Repair (Todd's Gerege)
on Hwy. 59 South.
Those answering the call
were: David Hailey, Alex
Taylor, John Tutt and La-
dies Auxiliary members
Marsha Tomlinson and
Tracy Las.
Monday, March 9th, the
Department was called to
the Roger Scott residence
some three miles South
of tewn off Highway 87.
Firemen arrived to find a
travel trailer (unoccupied)
completely destroyed and
the surrounding woods
parched by the blaze. The
fire was the result of a
burn pile of leaves and
brush that got out of
control end spread to the
trailer end surrounding
area. The Scott*1 home
was not damaged by th*
Maze.
