Laura,The Cotton-
.. Bale Battleship
By Jeff Carroll
The year was'1835. and
in the Mextcdji Bro-
vir-ae of Texas the pet
of revolution began to
boll OYW. Anglo sett-
fers from the United
States and from other
nations flocked to
Steptten r. Jtostln’s
colonies and to nose
of other empressarios.
Trade for the neces-
sities of life was
heavy between American
ports and those at Ve-
lasco and Anahuac. Re-
strictive taxes were
placed on all American
goods. All ships en-
tering or leaving Tex-
as ports were required
to first sail to Vela-
sco and there obtain
cleamact from Mexican
officials. To enforce
this regulation, the
Mexican Navy establi-
shed a blockade and
any ship sighted was
stopped. Those without
papers, even. If in
route to Velasco to
get proper clearances,
were confiscated,their
cargos sent to Mexican
ports and their crews
sent to prison.
In Velasco, matters
reached a peak with
the arrival of the
heavily armed Mexican
warship Correo de Mej-
ico unde? the command
o*~a mercenary Engli-
shman, Lt. Thompson.
The port was sealed
and the timing
couldn't have been
worse. The schooner
San Felipe, inbound
from Mew Orleans to
Velasco with a cargo
of arms and powder and
with Stephen F. Austin
himself,and other pro-
minent Texans appeared
on the horizon.
The wind failed, both
ships were becalmed.
Capture of the San Fel-
ipe would have set back
