BIBLE NOTES
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
Daniel’s Trial and Our Own
A few days ago I read the
following excerpt from a book
in my library and thought how
appropriate it was for our day.
Please take a few minutes af-
ter reading this and give some
serious and prayerful thought
to the many lessons it teaches.
Mark Sloan
An old adage states, “Those
who fail .It to learn from his-
tory are doomed to repeat its
mistakes.” The story of
Daniel’s trial parallels situations
every day in our nation.
Whether young or old, we can
learn from Daniel.
As for prosperity, things
seem to be going well with us.
Our lot has been cast in fair
ground with goodly heritage.
As for our religion, no sacri-
fice is required. Church build-
ings are conveniently within
easy driving distance. There is
no bone-breaking threat of the
lion’s den to be a nominal mem-
ber of “a church.” We lose no
comfort,, or fame or power by
our flirtation with religion. In
the midst of this ease it strikes
us that it would be for our ad-
vantage to conform more
closely with the laws (moral;
social, or religious) which so-
ciety around us prescribes. It
is not seemly for us to put our-
selves in opposition to the opin-
ions of the majority. To con-
form or merely compromise
our religious beliefs with soci-
ety is but a small matter in be-
half of self -interest. It may
even be to our self-interest so-
cially, politically and business-
wise to be a member of “a
church.” After all we do not
want to look pious or fanati-
cal. We do not want society to
look at us as though we are lay-
ing down rules for the conduct
of life. Why should we give up
power and fame for some reli-
gious scruple which our best
friends and family members
cannot understand anyway?
We need “Daniels” today!
Courageous men and women
with conviction. Too many of
us, inour miserable self-deceit,
silence the voice of our con-
science, finding ourselves fur-
ther removed from God with-
out remorse. Oh, what is
wrong with silencing the voice
of our conscience? After all, it
is a personal matter and no one
understands it anyway. It is this
matter of conscience that made
Daniel the man that he was. In
his conviction, he knew that to
silence his concience would be
to his peril. It would be to the
peril of his people. As a brave,
Mark Sloan
religious human soul, he wit
“dare” not re-
tract.
Polycarp
said. “Eighty
and six years
have I served
him, and he
never did me
wrong, and
how can I
now blas-
pheme my King that has saved
me?” Astonished at the cour-
age of conviction held by
Polycarp, the governor sent the
herald to proclaim in the middle
of the stadium, “Polycarp con-
fesses taht he is a Christian!?
The soul that is conscious of
God knows no neutrality. It is
not that Daniel refused be
ovedient to men. He had shown
himself to be obedient and re-
spectful to certain Babylonian
and Persian laws before. But he
was defiant against any attempt
that robs Jehovah God of His
rightful authority. Daniel gave
his heart and soul to the obedi-
ence of Jehovah. Thus it is re-
corded, “And when Daniel
knew that the writing was
signed, he went into his hoarse
(NOw his windows were
opened in his chamber toward
Jerusalem) and he kneeled pon
his knees three times a day and
prayed and gave thanks before
his God, as he did afortime.”
Don’t we think that such
courage of con viction is needed
today? Paul wrote, “I beseech
you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sac-
rifice, holy, acceptable unto
God which is your reasonable
service, and be not conformed
to this world, but be ye trans-
formed by the renewing of your
mind, that ye may prove what
is that good, and acceptable and
perfect will of God.” (Rom.
12 { 1,2),_

Woodland Ladies have meeting
The ladies of Woodland Chris-
tian Church met this past Thurs.
night @ the church for the
monthly meeting. They had a lot
of things to discuss, in fact they
didn’t get out of there until about
9:45 that evening. They dis-
THE WOODEN CROSS
There’s a little wooden
cross with
flowers all around,
it sits on a curve just out-
side of town
Few take the time to read
the name
written thereon; on the
young man or woman
that GOD has taken home.
Some despise the symbol
of the Savior’s
blessed cross, while others
pass and
silently mourn a family’s
loss.
Its just a little reminder to
those
passing by, and silent little
prayer
that no one else on that
curve will die.
Cecil Whitton
cussed the up & coming ladies
retreat & all of the items that are
needed. They also talked about
the missions that they support.
They all voted in taking D.C.C.
off of their missions & adding
one more prisoner to the A.R.M.
mission that they already sup-
port; so now instead of sponsor-
ing 2 prisoners, they will now
sponsor 3. A.R.M. is a very good
mission, it supplies a Bible course
to the prisoners who would like
to change their life around. This
ministry has saved countless
prisoners!!! They also talked
about finding another children’s
home to support, one closer to
our hearts that our church kids
can go & help out during the
summer months. Some of the la-
dies would also like to start up
an all ladies Sunday School class;
if this gets up & going we’ll be
sure to let all know for the ladies
who would like to come & enjoy
the teaching. They are also plan-
ning on having a ladies seminar
in the month of March, more de-
tails to come. Since we didn’t
have a meeting in Dec., we are
short on our mission giving. We
need to make up for both Dec. &
Jan. Thank you for support that
you as a community give to the
church. May God shine on you
& yours always.
Works of flesh
We are continuing a study of
the works of the flesh using
Holman’s Bible dictionary and
Websters. Last week we studied
adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, idolatry, witchcraft
and hatred. So, let us pick up
there for the list given in Gal. 5:
18-21.
Variance: contention, strife,
quarrel. Romans 12: 18. “If it be
possible, as much as lieth in you,
live peaceable with all men.”
Emulations: desire to equal or
surpass; ambition rivalry.
Romans 12: 18 fits nicely here
also. Acts 10: 34 “Then Peter
opened his mouth and said, Of a
truth I perceive that God is no
respecter of persons.” The only
person we should set our goal to
be like is Christ.
Wrath: The emotional
response to perceived wrong and
injustice, often translated “anger,
indignation, and irritation.” Eph.
4: 26.”Be ye angry and sin not,
let not the sun go down on your
wrath.” Eph. 4: 31-32. “Let all
bitterness and wrath and anger
and clamor and evil speaking be
put away from you, with all
malice. And be ye kind to one
another, tender-hearted,
forgiving one another, even as
God for Christ’s sake hath
forgiven you.’’Strife; discord,
fighting or quarreling. Both
forbidden in above scriptures.
Seditions: stirring up
discontent, resistance, or
rebellion against the govemnent
in power. Revolt: rebellion
against lawful authority.
Heresies: religions belief
apposed the teachings of the
apostles. 2 Tim. 3: 16
“All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in
righteousness. “Envyings: to
feel ill will, jealousy or discontent
of another person’s possessions.
Begrudge others. Murders and
drunkenness are self-
explanatory. Revellings:
Holman’s definition is noisy
partying, or merrymaking and
Webster does not agree. The
Bible tells us to avoid even the
appearance of such.
I Thess, 5: 22 “Abstain from
all appearance of evil.”
I John 2: 15 -17 “Love not the
world, neither the things that are
in the world. If any man love the
world, the love of the Father is
not in him. For all that is in the
world, the lust of the flesh, the
lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life is not of the Father, but is of
the world. And the world passeth
away and the lust thereof, but he
that doeth the will of God abideth
forever.”
These are the works of the
flesh. Study examine yourself.
Are you walking in the flesh?
