OFFICE—Election day!
Quite an exciting time. I do
hope you voted. Well, we went
back to the doctor again this
past Friday. More x-rays and
CAT scans, etc.for Doug. This
is checkup time for the
removed malignancy and we
hope it is still all clear. Of
course, they will let us know
later. His new heart valve and
pacemaker are still doing
great. Still stumbles and is
likely to fall at any moment.
Has to really watch where he
steps. But using his new “Ike
Reeves” cane helps him a lot.
He is very proud of the new
cane. Takes it everywhere.
Still wish he could find the first
one Ike gave him, but don’t
suppose that will happen.
Someone needed it worse
than he did, I guess.
SPIDER—that silly little
spider that makes his home in
my computer ate up lots of
words in the column last
week. He misspelled a lot of
words and even left some out.
Some type got pushed up
under a picture again. He is
really good at that.
BUGS—Ever see so may
bugs on your windshield! Man
the further you drive, the more
there are!
MOVIE—Lynn, Nancy,
Patsy Blissett and Doug and i

night and saw Mel Gibson’s

How do you “mull”

Ever hear anyone say they

Where did the term “house

when you take a lot of gifts to
a person or when you set the

a “housewarming” in
summer?
How exactly do you keep
“in touch” with someone?
How do you get “out of

Who started the saying,

Ever hear someone go

GARY—The donkey
basketball game was a
scream. Nancy and Lynn
were there and said a lot of
folks attended. It was funny
as you will see in some of the
photos in the paper. They also
covered the Tenaha games
and we want to congratulate
the Tigers on an great season!
TIMPSON—Timpson
ISD is on spring break this
week and it seems quiet
around the school. Hope the
kids have a safe little vacation.
BIRTHDAYS—Happy
late birthday greetings to
Becky Reeh in Shreveport.
Her husband is Thomas Reeh,
Doug’s brother. She is 39
again, of course. Also, Buz
Davenport, Doug’s nephew
had a birthday last week.
Many more!
NEWS—There is a new
column or two this week.
Ruthie Latin has written one
and a new sound off column
called “Let’s Talk About It!”
If you have something you
would like to discuss, write it
and sign it and bring it or send
it in.

any other community news.
We’ll try again next week and

Addie B. McClendon, we
miss you!!
When I was asked by two
lovely young women who
work at one of the area nurs-
ing homes where I visit most
Sundays after church, “when
are the people or someone
going to replace Mrs. Addie
B.’s writing in the local news
paper?” My reply was,
“whenever you young people
decide to take over the reins
that we old folks have got to
give up because of time and
health reasons.” We must give
up the idea that volunteering
for a task because no one
asked or invited us to do.
Things are not always done by
the smartest, but by the will-
ing to step up and be counted.
Not even you can be sure of
what you can or cannot do
until you make an effort. Sur-
prise yourself and other by
making a vow to change the
way you have been doing
things. Give respect and gain
respect for yourself and oth-
ers, whether it is on your job,
church, home, neighborhood
or whereever.
There are old songs and sto-
ries that have inspired us to try
to understand the past and
memorize how life went on.
However, this is a new day,
the beginning of another era.
I remember the beauty of the
words in song, “Lift Every
Voice and Sing.” All graduat-
ing classes marched to the
tune of “God Our Father.”
The da, da, da beat at the be-
ginning of the music gave us
a chill down our back. And
everyone, whether they knew
the words or not, hummed
along with it. No one missed
a commencement program,
whether they knew all the
graduating class or not and al-
most everyone carried a gift
or two. We were proud of
those persons who had stuck
it out and hung in there in spite
ofhardships.
Going go college was a
privilege and not available just
for the accepting.
Quit saying,. “I can’t do
that!” Try it before you knock
it. Respect is hard to come by
even when you think you have
earned it. You first have to
“give it” to “receive it.” Some-
times you just can’t seem to
do anything right. Damned if
you do and damned if you
don’t. God did not make us the
same. It takes all kinds to
make things work as is,
whether we agree or not. Be
motivated to make a differ-
ence and remember what
goes around comes around. I
truly believe that good comes
to those who do good. It may
not come from where you
would expect it. But it will
come. It takes a lot of pa-
tience, prayers and endur-
ance.

Had a letter from Ms. Lurline P. Crocker from Sugarland,
Texas concerning this picture of an old church found on
a picture post card from long ago. It ran in the T&T
News recently to see if anyone could identify the church.
Her letter reads:
Editor:
Do not know Rev. L.B.
Paxton, but I do know this
church and want to tell him.
This is the First United
Methodist Church of Tenaha,
Texas. It was located on the
same spot as the First
Methodist Church now stands.
The tower had a large bell with
a rope that hung dowm that
was used to call people to
worship. At 15 minutes to ten
on Sunday, the bell was rung
three times then again at 10
O’clock. Tis was calling to
Sunday School and church.
Church members took turns in
ringing. Then worship what
time was left. In winter, the
church was heated with a
wood stove. In summer, a
brush arbor would be built and
benches would be moved out
there for important meetings
as there was no fan or air
conditioning. Many important
programs were held out there.
One was a Tom Thumb
wedding and at Christmas
time a big Christmas Tree was
brought in and all members
received a gift after which a
program was put on and
eveyone enjoyed. All
members had duties - like
ringing the bell, making the
fires and keeping the church
clean. A few of the early
members I remember are as
following: The Nan Wall
Family, Fleming family, John
Parrish family. Last names of
Rider, Baldwin, Carter,
Calhoun, Morris, Witherspoon,
Ford Parkers, Clark, Fears,
Harrison, Whites, Scurlock,
Davis, Christians, Womacks
and many others I fail to recall.
There is a history book in
the church office. Or it was
years ago. I am Lurline
Parrish Crocker and grew up
going to this church along with
my brother, George
(deceased) and sister Nelwyn,
children of Quilla and Jack
Parrish. Hope someone will
enjoy this news and I enjoyed
sending it.

Singers wanted for Palm
Sunday Choir Service
The East Texas United Methodist Small Church Combined
Choir program for the Easter season had their first practice
Saturday. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Bonita Lowrie,
Music Director at Garrison. Tenaha United Methodist Church
will host the program with refreshments in the fellowship hall
after the program. This program will be presented on Sunday,
April 4th (Palm Sunday) at 6:00 pm. The offering from this
service will be sent to the Heifer Project International. The
next combined rehearsal will be at the Tenaha First United
Methodist Church Saturday, March 20th at 3:00 pm. At the
first practice there were participants from Garrison, Mt.
Enterprise, Paxton, Timpson, Stockman, Tennessee, Murvaul
and Tenaha. There is still room for more singers. You do not
have to be a member of a United Methodist Church to
participate in the choir. We do have some singers from Arlam
Baptist Church. Garrison UMC provides all the robes for the
choir participants. All singers need to get fitted for robes at
the next practice. A list of the hymns and copies of the music
is available. If you need that information contact Martha
Brennion-Nease at Tenaha City Hall. Remember there is also
a need for an audience.
