have always been so very
generous during our Food &

Barbara Sissom. ‘This is a
very caring community, and
we deeply appreciate all the
support we have enjoyed.
The Food & Fund Drive is
always fun because we get
to see and chat with so
many folks as they come
into David’s. We’re looking
forward to doing it again
this year."

Teach Your
Children Well
We all start off life loving
our parents. How can we
not? Ehey gave us life,
provide for us and in nearly
all cases, they’re the first
people we see and interact
with.
However, as we get older,
we start to identify with our
parents more and recognize
theircharacier. Unfortunately
for some, this is when they'll
realize that their parents
might be too self-involved or
worse. Hopefully, the
majority of us have a love
that deepens for their parents
when they recognize the
sacrifices and gifts they have
provided.
In honor of the recently
passed Mother’s Day and the
upcoming Father’s Day, I
want to share the moments
when my blind love for my
parents turned to a deeper
respect.
Mom and Dad sacrificed a
lot for me when I was growing
up. C hristmas was a big deal
around my house and I never
wanted for anything. They
even helped pay for college
so I wouldn't enter the job
market contending with
debt.
There were bigger moments
of sacrifice though. When we
were living in San Marcos,
they entered me into a
private school until I was 12
so I could have a good
education. To help pay for it,
Mom worked there in several
teaching capacities.
I appreciated this when I
wasoldenoughtounderstand
it, but my appreciation was
much more fierce when she
told me about the tyrant of a
boss she was working for all
those years just so I could be
ahead of the curve when
entering Junior High.
I can still remember her
saying she actually
appreciated my attitude
problems a little. I got nothing
but good remarks for

Army Reserve Pvt. Ronald
R Towers has graduated
from basic combat training at
Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of
training, the soldier studied
the Army mission, history,
tradition and core values,
physical fitness, and received
instruction and practice in
basic combat skills, military
weapons, chemical warfare
and bayonet training, drill
and ceremony, marching,
rifle marksmanship, armed
and unarmed combat, map
reading, field tactics, military
courtesy, military justice
system, basic first aid, foot
marches, and field training
exercises.
Towers is the son of Roy
Towers of West Cage Street,
Stephenville.
He is a 2006 graduate of
Dublin High School.
MOWEC shoots down senior hunger
conduct for every year while
1 was there except for the
year her boss was teaching
me when 1 apparently made
my teacher's life difficult.
This is probably the only
time I’m proud of behavior I
shouldn’t be proud of.
Dad has always been the
very model of a provider,
working hard to keep us out
of debt and give us a
comfortable life. His integrity
and sacrifice was made
apparent to me when he left
a long-standing job though.
The company he was working
for was sold and Dad didn't
agree with some of the new
company's practices. They
offered him a better position
and a raise which Dad
declined after observing how
they treated the other
employees.
Dad was quickly able to
find another job at FMC but
we had to get the house
ready for sale and put it on
the market so Dad had to
come to Stephenville before
we were ready. Dad rented a
space at an RV park and for
months, he spent weekdays
at work and living in our
pop-up camper (which was
very small and had no
bathroom) before making
the 4 hour drive back to the
house in San Marcos on the
weekends.
My life is scattered with
lessons they have taught me
by example as they have
instilled in me kindness,
generosity, devotion and
reasoning, but it was during
these moments that I stopped
simply loving them because
they were my parents and
started to recognize them as
the man and woman who
gave up parts of their life so
I could have one.
As I stand at the threshold
of marriage this October, Fm
thinking about my family in
the future and any time I get
nervous about being a good
husband or father, I take a
deep breath and realize I
have 30 years of good
examples to follow.
Meals on Wheels of Erath
County (MOWEC) held their
second annual sporting clay
fun shoot, raffle and dinner
and auction this weekend.
The event attracted 67
shooters from Stephenville,
Ranger, Fort Worth, Dallas
and San Angelo. The
fundraiser brought in
$27,582 to help feed local
homebound elderly
residents.
Shooters traveled through
12 stations, taking aim at a
total of 100 targets at a
course set up by Greystone
Castle Sporting Club. The
course offered everything
from overhead shots to
rabbit targets.
Top shooter awards were
handed out in three
divisions. The Youth
Division went to Blake Smith
on the UCS Team with a
score of 65. The Women's
Division went Shana on the
Schreiber Team with a score
of 20. And Jeremy Keith on
the Amber Homes Team
won the Men's Division with
a score of 96.
The fundraiser also
featured two raffles. The
first raffle was 1,000 rounds
of 9mm ammunition and
went to Larry Cunningham
of Ranger, Texas. The
second raffle featured three
guns: a Glock 19, Clock 17,
and a Model 70 Winchester
270 with Bushnell scope.
Bob Cranford and Jerry
Norris each won a Glock
handgun. Marlene and Bill
White claimed the
Winchester rifle.
Meals on Wheels delivers
more than 3,000 meals each
month to home-bound
seniors. Proceeds from the
fun shoot will help MOWEC
continue home-delivered
meal services and keep
elderly clients off waiting
lists.
MOWTC Executive Director
Whitney Lee said the
organization relies on
annual fundraising efforts
to keep the wheels moving
on daily home-delivered
meal services.
“We delivered 3,998 meals
in the month of April alone,”
Lee said. “There’s no way
w'e could have helped that
many people without the
support of the
community.”
