ment stationed' at Ft. William D.
Davis in the zone.

RUSHING THE SEASON—Action blooms early on a Dallas
high school field for the. Texans of the infant American
Football League. The quarterbacks go to work ahead of
the others, and Coach Hank Stram gives Cotton Davidson
some pointers. Assistant Coach Tom Catlin acts as center.
Houston Patton, another candidate, is in the background.
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Don Larsen of World Series no-
hit fame returned to the Ameri-
can Assn. Wednesday night with
a three-hit pitching job that key-
ed Dallas-Fort Worth to a 6-3
victory over Indianapolis.
Third - place St. Paul edged
front - running Denver 6-5 and
pulled within a game of runnerup
Louisville which lost to Charles-
ton 6-1. Minneapolis conquered
Houston 6-2.
Larsen, who performed at Den-
ver before going up to the New
York Yankees, walked three and
struck out eight in carving out
his victory at Indianapolis. Jim
Woods nicked him for a home
run and Larry Raines banged a
triple.
Jim Delsing produced four runs
for Dallas-Fort Worth with a so-
lo homer in the fifth and a three-
run roundtripper in the third.
Two homers by catcher Bob
Tillman produced four runs that
sparked Minneapolis to its tri-
umph over Houston, held in check
by pitcher A1 Worthington. He
struck out four, walked one and
gave up seven hits.
Amarillo rammed over five
runs in the sixth to come from
behind and beat Austin. Southpaw
John Davolio scattered' eight hits
in posting his seventh victory of
the season. He fanned 10.
Ron Herbel of Rio Grande Val-
ley finally met defeat as Tulsa
beat him 5-2. It made his record
10-1 for the campaign.

Haddix After
Fifth Victory
Over Braves
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Harvey Haddix, the little Pitts-
burgh left-hander who pitched 12
perfect innings and still couldn’t
beat Milwaukee a year ago,
opens tonight shooting for his
fifth victory in a row against the
Braves.
Milwaukee, five games behind
the front-running Pirates in the
National League, counters with
its ace lefty, Warren Spahn, a fel-
low who used to beat the Pirates
as regularly as the Braves once
bead Haddix.
The game at Pittsburgh is the
only one scheduled' for the day
after the second All-Star game in
New York. The majors’ three-
day respite started Monday when
the National League beat the
American 5-3 in the first 1960
All-Star game in Kansas City.
Then the Nationals made it a
sweep with a 6-0 followup Wednes-
day.
Tonight’s game is a makeup.
Friday, Cincinnati comes into
Pittsburgh, Milwaukee goes to
Philadelphia, Chicago is at St
Louis, and Los Angeles, the hot-
test team in the NL, is at San
Francisco.
In the American League, action
resumes Friday with New York,
in front by 2Vz games, at De-
troit, Washington at second-place
Cleveland, Baltimore at Chicago,
and Boston at Kansas City.
On May 26, 1959, Haddix pitched
the unprecedented 12 perfect in-
nings against the Braves, then
lost in the 13th on one hit.
Alpm Cowboys
Win First Half
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Alpine won the first half by
1114 games and the second half
starts Thursday night in the
Sophomore League.
If some other club wins the
second half there will be a play-
off for the championship. Other-
wise, Alpine will win the title
and the season will end with the
final games of the regular sche-
dule.
One game was played Wednes-
day night. It was a makeup with
Artesia beating Carlsbad 9-5 and
it decided nothing except to give
Alpine a half-game more lead
than it -would have had.
A 2-run homer by Dick Dietz
in the sixth inning put the Giants
so far ahead Carlsbad had no
chance to catch up.
It was decided to split the
season at a meeting of the lea-
gue of directors at Hobbs Tuesday
night.
