New Cotton Press. A few days since we visited
the Cotton Press lately erected in this city by Mr. N. T.
Davis and were agreeably surprised to find that the ma--chinc
used for compressing cotton bales admirably an-
swers the purpose for which it was constructed. With
the aid of only two hands Mr. Davis can compress a
bale of 500 pounds into a space only 22 inches square in
sbout fifteen minutes. The facility wilh.which this work
is accomplished is truly surprising. Mr. Davis has also
-connected with his press a large warehouse- where bales
-of cotton may be stored for a trifling sum; and preserved
in good order for shipment aUhe convenience of the mer-
chant of planter.
Several teams loaded with cotton arrivod on Saturday
last from Fayette county. The owners of this cotton say
that they prefer this market to those of the western towns.
They can obtain a higher price for their cotton here; and
purchase goods cheaper than at any port west of Galves-
ton. -There is little doubt that the trade of the upper Col
orado will be directed again to this place whenever the
roads are improved.
Negro Disturbances. There have been several
outrages among the negroes upon two or three of the
nlantations on the Brazos within the last month. The
overseer on the plantation of Mr. Burdituoar Richmond
was killed by one of the slaves who attacked him while
at work. The slave after committing the fatal deed fled
and has not yet been taken. Two negroes on the planta-
tion of Mr. Terrey attacked the latter with knives and ax-
es but Mr. Terry with admirable courage defended him-
self with a large heavy whip until he drew a pistol and
shot one so as to disable him. With a well-directed blow
of his whip he broke the arm of the other and compelled
him to submit
La.ey Byron. The owners of this steam boat have
made several atttempts to raise her but owing to the fre-
quent and sudden rising of the river they have as often
been compelled to abandon the undertaking. The river
within a few weeks has risen twenty or thirty feet over
the vessel and it is feared that she will bo completely fill-
ed with a deposit of sand. This will render it difficult if
not impracticable to save the vessei. The machinery
however is not injured and may easily be removed in low
water. .
Cotton Market. The Brig Rover which arrived
at Galveston on the 5th brought dafs two days later than
those brought by the New York.
The English Mail Steamer Hibernia arrived at Boston
on the 19th ult and brought Liverpool dates to the 4th
ult. An advance of d had taken place in the Liverpool
market in the quotations of the week previous. The sales
exceeded by 10000 bales the sales of any week previous.
This news infused new animation in the New Orleans
market and 10000 bales were sold on the morning the
news was received but prices did not advance.
The Lipans and Tonkewas. We mentioned last
year that a portion of the tribe of Lipans had separated
from the main body and gone towards the Rio Grande.
Within a few months the main body of the tribe have re-
moved westward and no tidings have been received from
them since their departure. It is not known whether
thev have deserted to the Mexicans or have gone else-
where. They have long been at war with the Comman-
ches and it is not probable that they have united with
them. They were formerly in close alliance with the
Sereticks who reside near the mouth of the Rio Puerro;
and it is not improbable that they have formed a union
with that tribe. The Tonkewas since their departure
have made few excursions beyond the settlements ; fearing
to meet the Wacocs and other tribes hostile to them.
They did not venture to go out and fight the small party
of Wacoes and Caddoes that lately butchered three of
their warriors on the head waters of the Yagua. There
were only thirty Wacoes and Caddoes in this party ; and
the Tonkewas mustered a hundred warriors but so great
was their cowardice that they removed with their families
close to the residence of Gen. Burleson for protection.
Convention between Mexico and Yucatan.
Although it is well known that the difficulties between
Mexico and Yucatan have been amicably adjusted the
details of the adjustment have never been published here.
The National Intelligencer of the 6th Feb'y contains a
lengthy article giving the features of the Convention rati-
fied on the 14th Dec by the Mexican Minister of Wan
and the Commissioners oi Yucatan. This Couvention
was confirmed by the President ad interim and the Coun-
cil of Ministers on the 15th Dec. It embraces nineteen
articles by which Yucatan places herself under the gener-
al sovereignty of Mexico; but retains certain local privileg
es of Independence. She acknowledges the Provisional
Government of Mexico and the Constitution sanctioned
on tho 12th of June 1843. But reserves the right to order
her internal Government and nominates her own civil
officers with the exception of the Governor who is nomi-
nated by the President; and the Governor appoints subor-
dinate officers from trios-- previously chosen by the people.
She is exempted from furnishing any troops for the army
except in a foreign war but engages to furnish her quota
for the Navy ; and no troops under any pretence are to be
sent to Yucatan except to repel a foreign foe. She regu-
lates her own duties on foreign goods conforming how-
ever to existing treaties. And the productions of each
country are to be imported and exported reciprocally un-
der duties to be fixed by luw. She is to use no banner but
that of the Nation. A general amnesty is secured to all
political offenders as to persons and property. These terms
will render Yucatan to Mexico what the feudal Barons of
ike fourteenth century were to the English Kings. And as
ihore great Barons oft set the throne at defiance when
their rights were invaded and involved the country in fre-
quent civil wars: so will Yucatan whenever disputes arise
relative to her privileges set the Mexican government at
defiance and civil war will follow as a natural conse-
quence. Her people cannot "serve two masters" and we
may expect ere long that they will either hold to Mexico
and discard their own government or hold to their own
local officers and discard those of Mexico. There is no
medium course for her lo pursue with safety. She must
return to the Confederacy upon the same conditions as the
other Departments or assert her entire Independence.
There is now a powerful party desirous to throw off the
Mexican yoke; and it is not improbable that it will gain
the ascendency in a few years and declare for Independence.
- CountySeat of Austin County. The Commisi
ioncrs appointed to select a site for the seat of Justice c i
Austin County have selected a portion of the tract of M.
Woburn about five miles above the mouth of Mill Creek-
It is about equi-distant between Mill Creek and the Bra
zos. As soon as the necessary buildings arc erected th-
ShcrifFand other county officers will remove their offici
to that place. The land in the immediate vicinity of th' -place
is generally poor and Sandy; and as it is not situa'
ed on any navigable stream it is not to be expected that
will ever become a place of any considerable importanci
It has been chosen rather on account of its central posi
lion than on account of any natural advantages it posses
ses.
Wild Pigeons. During the winter just past immensfr
numbers of wild pigeons were found in the forests border-
ing the Trinity and in the Red kivcr counties. Consi-
derable numbers wore found as far South as Washington
county. It is very seldom that these birds visit the country
within two or three hundred miles of the coast and it is
probable that the cold at the North has driven them further
South than usual.
