Gospel Concert Slated At
Laguna Park Church
Blackwood Brothers Quartet To Perform
LAGUNA PARK - The First
Baptist Church of Laguna Park will
host a gospel concert on Friday,
Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., featuring Cecil
Blackwood and the Blackwood
Brothers. ,
Formed more than 60 years ago
by three brothers and a nephew in
Choctaw County, Miss., the legend-
ary quartet has become an institu-
tion in the Southern gospel world.
Membership has changed during
the years, but Cecil Blackwood has
sung with the group for nearly 40
years.
Before joining the Blackwoods,
he organized a teen gospel group
called the Songfellows in the early
1950s. That group once counted
Elvis Presley as a members.
The Blackwoods later organized
the National Quartet Convention
and the Gospel Music Association,

Classes Slated Next
Month In Clifton
CLIFTON — An introduction to
photography class will be offered
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12, by
the Bosque County Conservatory of
Fine Arts Photorraphy Club. The
instructor will be Rick Eilers,
owner of The Photographic Center
and Gallery in Lancaster.
The course covers basic camera
functions, aperture, shutter speed,
depth of field, composition, camera
handling techniques, choosing
lenses and filters, creative use of
camera accessories (including tri-
pods, flashes, etc.), and choosing
between color and black-and-white
film.
Assignments will be made in two
session, from 9 a m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturday, and from 12:30.to 4:30 p.m.
on Sunday. The fee is $50 per per-
son ($40 for BCCFA members), and
includes lunch Saturday, refresh-
ments, and film processing.

tion and fee deadlines are Wednes-
day, Oct. 8.

The concerts are filled with songs
the group has helped make famous,
from 1934 to the present. These
songs include “How Great Thou
Art,” “The Old Country Church,”
“I’ll Fly Away,” and “Just A Little
Talk With Jesus,” along with many
more.
“Everyone is invited to come out
and enjoy this fabulous group who
has traveled more miles, sung be-
fore more audiences, ministered in
more countries, sold more record-
ings, and won more awards while
doing the service of the Lord, than
any other musical group,” said a
spokesman.
The gospel concert is free. A love
offering will be taken.
The church is located on Bryant
Street, across from the Post Office
in Laguna Park.

Humane Society
Plans Garage Sale
WHITNEY - The Lake Whitney
Humane Society will hold a garage
sale on Saturday, Nov. 1.
“Now is a good time to do those
things you have been meaning to do
for months: clean out the closet,
clean out your garage, clean out your
cabinets, get rid of some of your
knickknacks,” said Nancy Twitty.
“Contact your neighbors and get
them to do the same thing. All pro-
ceeds from the sale will go toward
reopening our animal shelter,”
TNvitty added.
The drop-off point for donated
items is a large metal building just
past Vic’s Gun Shop on Fhrm Road
1713, north of Whitney. The sale will
be held in Whitney.

Crawford Arts,
Crafts Show
Slated Saturday
CRAWFORD — Spaces are still
available outside for the upcoming
Holiday Crafts and Collectible Show
to be held on Saturday. Sept. 27, from
8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Crawford Commu
nity Center. All inside booths and
several outside spaces have already
been reserved.
Exhibits will feature crafts and col-
lectibles, uniques, and antiques from
local and area residents.
Hie show begins at 8 a.m. with an
old-fashioned country breakfast of
sausage and scrambled eggs with all
the trimmings for a nominal charge
of $4. Booths open at that time for
shopping.
Some of the specialty items that
will be available include candles, bird
houses, personalized children’s
books, jewelry, antiques and col-
lectibles, woodcraft, bunnies, angels,
quilted crafts, crochet, and gifts.
There will also be a plant booth spon-
sored by the center.
The Community Center will spon-
sor a booth with mums and other fall
flowers, based on availability. “Prices
will be reasonable. If your flower
beds need a lift, run by and check us
out,” said spokesman Dovie
Lucdckcr
Cathy Finstad of Clifton will be
selling her bird houses at the show.
“AH of Cathy’s friends in Clifton and
the surrounding areas are invited to
support her and enjoy a plea ant
outing in Crawford,” Luedeker said.
The show is sponsored by the
CCC, a nonprofit organization. For

Fair Is Oct. 4
CLIFTON — “A wide variety of
items will be (mi sale at our first-ever
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8553
Ladies Auxiliary arts and crafts fair,”
said spokesman Cleo Ellingson. The
event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct
4, in Clifton.
Table space is available for rent at
$13 per 6-foot table. Eight-foot tables
had been being rented for $15 each,
but those tables are now all re-
served. The sale will be held at the
VFW Post Home at 215 North Avenue
D in downtown Clifton.
Items to be showcased include
Halloween decorations, Christmas
wreaths, ceramics, woodworking
items, quilt*, baked goods, sand-
wiches, and much more.

Double Nickel Club
Will Hold Dance
Friday In Clifton
CLIFTON - The Double Nickel
Club will hold a dance on Friday,
Sept. 26, at the Civic Center, with mu-
sic by the Country Sounds. Dancing
begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.
“We urge all residents of Clifton
and surrounding areas to come and
enjoy fellowship, fun, and good coun-
try music. If you haven’t danced with
us, you’ve missed a lot of fun. We are
like one big family,’ said club spokes-
man Rabon Moore.
Attendees are asked to bring fin-
ger foods to share at intermission.
The club furnishes coffee, tea, and

Senior Source Health Fair Oct. 3
WACO—Hie Retired Senior Vol-
unteer Program will be holding a
Senior Source Health and Informa-
tion Fair on Friday, Oct 3, from 7
a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The fair will be held in the Com-
munity Service building at 4601
North 19th Street, Waco.
The event will be hosted by
McLennan Community College and
sponsored by the Area Agency on
Aging.
Numerous booths with informa-
tion and free screenings will be
available. Some of the screenings
available are hearing, cholesterol,
EKG’s, and useful information on
diabetes, safety, and arthritis.
Flu shots will also be offered free
with MEDICARE (part B) cards.
Otherwise the cost for the flu shots
is $6.
There will be four seminars be-
ginning each hour starting at 8 a.m.
Each seminar will last 30 to 40 min-
utes. The fair is open to the public.
