A PropMjs without Honor in his own Country. Twenty
years smcerMr. John Lea when the cholera first raged inlhe
West was a close and intelligent observer of its ravages. He
lound that the mortality from that scourge of our race was
limited to those who used limestone water and that rain wa-
ter as a prophylactic of that disease. His theory originated
here in the West and since 1832 he lias promulgated it in
publications of his own in medical journals newspapers in
conversation in every way possible; yet it is doubted whe-
ther one hundred persons in his own city here of one hun-
dred and thirty thousand inhabitants have given credence to
his geological theory of cholera or have practiced upon it-
He has urged it upon our own government but without suc-
cess. He has communicated it to several of the European
governments and with better success we judge than with our
own. We find the following paragraph in a communication
from the correspondent of the New York Times dated Lon-
don September 17th :
The report of the French commission says that it has been
Fully ascertained both at Paris and elsewhere that rain-water
is a prophylactic of cholera and that the disease has never
proved an epidemic in any city where rain water is exclu-
sively used."
Our only comment on the above is let justice be done Mr.
Lea. Cincinnati Gazette.
A New Game. Officer Marshall says the Cincinnati Times
informs us of a new game which has been introduced by the
'sharpers" on the Levee. It is as follows: The sharper places
a galvanized counterfeit So gold piece into an empty pocket-
book. Getting alongside of a green one he opens and looks
into it holding it in such a position (hat greeny sees the yel-
low boy. He pretends as if he does not see it. and closing
the book declares he is out of money and will sell the pocket-
book for a. mere trifle. He asks the green one if he will give
$2 for it; and he supposing that there is a $5 piece in it
which the holder knows not of readily gives the 2 slaps the
book into his pocket and slips off from the sharper for fear
. that he will find out that the money is in it. Scores have thus
been swindled out of their mouey some giving as high as
three and four dollars for a pocket book not worth a quarter
of a dollar.

useless and demoralizing business said in excuse : ' You
know doctor that I must live." This brave old hater of eve-
rything mean and hateful coolly replied that ' he did not see
the least necessity for that."
