Extra day to
file taxes
Johnson County offices
will be closed Friday, Dec.
31, for the New Year holi-
day. This date is important
for those wanting to pay
their property taxes before
the end of the year. How-
ever, Tax Assessor-Collector,
Scott Porter announced
Wednesday that any prop-
erty tax payment made in
person, online or with a
U.S. Post Office cancellation
mark of Jan. 3 will be posted
for the month of December
since it is considered the
next business day.
"It is not the deadline to
pay the 2010 property taxes
without penalty and inter-
est," Porter said, "but some
county residents like to pay
before the end of the year
to itemize on their 2010
federal taxes. We want to
make sure those taxpayers
are taken care of."

Some neighbors to the
south were so determined
never to become annexed into
Keene, they formed their own
city — Coyote Flats. A record
snowfall on Feb. n shut down
schools and businesses, a res-
taurant opened and, three
months later, closed, and the
public school district received
the state’s top rating, the only
district in the county to be
named exemplary.
These are just four of the
many stories that made 2010
an interesting year in Keene.
