SH 105 ramp reopens
The Texas Department
of Transportation
(TxDOT) has reopened
the entrance ramp onto
State Highway 6 from
State Highway 105.
This ramp has been
closed since the first of
December 2013.
TxDOT is negotiating
a change order with their
contractor to resurface
the area that was textured
and reopened Wednes-
day.
“After coming to
terms on the cost of the
new work, TxDOT’s con-
tractor will need higher
temperatures and warmer
weather to place the new
surface. We will close the
ramp for one day to place
the new surface when
conditions are correct,”
TxDOT Public Informa-
tion Officer Bob Colwell
said.
This is all part of the
first phase of the State
Highway 6 Navasota
$1.9 million one-way
conversion project con-
tracted to Big Creek Con-
struction that began July
of 2012.
TxDOT and their con-
tractor are wrapping up
loose ends on this project
and should close out this
project in the coming
months, Colwell said.
“Both TxDOT and
their contractor appreci-
ate everyone’s patience
during this closure,” Col-
well said.

Navasota High School faculty and staff recently held a reception for their new
principal, Derek Bowman (left), on Jan. 9. Bowman’s secretary Michele Har-
rington is pictured presenting him with a nameplate and Rattler pennant. Bow-
man had already been serving as interim principal and has worked for NISD
for 10 years.
Bowman named principa
at Navasota High School
Derek Bowman was
named principal at Nava-
sota High School on Dec.
16, 2013, during the regu-
lar December Board of
Trustees meeting.
“I am extremely ex-
cited and honored to be
named as principal and
given the opportunity to
lead Navasota High
School,” Bowman said. “I
am looking forward to
working with our staff to
ensure that all students at
Navasota High School
have the skills and oppor-
tunities to enter college or
the career they aspire after
graduation. I am grateful
for the opportunity and I
look forward to serving
our students in this great
community.”
Bowman has been
serving as interim princi-
pal since September. He
has served as an associate
and assistant principal at
Navasota High for five
years. Bowman has
worked for Navasota ISD
since 2004, when he
taught fourth grade at
Navasota Intermediate
School.
Bowman earned his
Masters of Education de-
gree from Prairie View
A&M University and his
Bachelor’s in Education
from Stephen F. Austin
State University. Derek
and his wife Gwen reside
in Navasota and have a
daughter, Madison, who is
a seventh grader at Nava-
sota Junior High; and a
son, Jaxson, who is a
kindergartener at John C.
Webb Elementary.
CONSERVATIVE FOR COUNTY JUDGE
• In the entire History of Grimes County, ONLY 3
County Judges have held law degrees. This
is consistent with most constitutional counties
throughout the State of Texas.
• The State of Texas requires all new County Judges
to undergo specific training courses and provides
resources along with reference materials to
adequately prepare them to perform their duties.
• The ability of a County Judge to carry out the
business side of their responsibilities affects each
one of our lives every single day (i.e. how the
money is budgeted acrossall county departments,
decisions on tax rates, efficiency in spending
money to get the most out of tax dollars, safety,
transportation, infrastructure considerations, and
more).
What is the #1 issue in this election?
The growth headed
Let's get ready. Let's be prepared. Let's elect a
County Judge with the experienced background
that matches the challenge ahead of us. Ben will
bring his proven business experience from the private
sector to Commissioner's Court as Grimes County
Judge.
